Sims wrote:It’s cos we built the entire team and formation around Cesc

We stuck with the same set up once he left and only changed it last year with this 3atb which made it worse

We also have a severe lack of Wengerballers in the squad which doesn’t help

It's because Wenger got away from actually playing Wengerball and instead became obsessed with playing tiki-taka lite shit.

Wengerball was all about runners off the ball, incisiveness and penetration; now we play square, endless sideway passing with no pace or directness.

Dark days.

We need two holding mids who cover ground and throw tackles in to make wengerball happen again. You can’t play Ramsey, Wilshere and Xhaka there. That’s why I rued is missing out on Kante.

Say what you like about Song, he put himself about. We need guys like Fernando, Kante or even Nzonzi to give our attack freedom.

Messi and Ronaldo would be great wing forwards with Ozil and Laca through the middle. If we get them we would be great going forward.

Nothing new.

He makes our attack click.

Without him, we run out of ideas.

The quality of our football has waned each season since Fabregas left.

And to think some didn't want him back...

Arsene Nose wrote:Tikki takka ruined us. Wenger built beautiful fast hit ‘em on the break teams. Athletic players with speed, strength and skill. And then he went tikki takka and all that went away and instead came the retinue of small central attacking short passing midfielders.

You can play tiki taka and long as you are prepared to strengthen the squad. Pep and City are showing it. If you think this current style is better than the tiki taka Cesc style then I don’t know. Wenger refused to sign competent defenders and real Defensive midfielders. Refused to sign better goal keepers, we had (Almunia, Fabianski, Manone, Szny etc). (Denilson, Song, as our defensive mids). Djourou, Schillaci, Sendros etc as CB options. Bedtner, Chamack etc as our striker options. And don’t forget Rookies (Walcott, Ramsey, Wilshere, Vela etc.)

He had a good foundation (Cesc, Rosicky, Hleb and Flamini for a good season). But then let Hleb and Flamini go etc. Signed Nasri and Arshavin but still refused to address our defensive side. But since the Cesc era ended we have become a joke. No defined style of play. Getting spanked by 6, 5, 4 goals is now expected etc. With the tiki taka i always felt confident of winning game or always felt that we were closer to competing for the title. But since that era ended i have never felt like we were anywhere near. Give me the respectable tiki taka over this nonsense we have had in the last 5 seasons.

---------- Song - Wilshere
Theo/Shava - Cesc - Nasri/Shava
----------- van Persie

I don't see Welbeck, Iwobi, or Xhaka in there. Soz.

What I see is the best CAM in the world at the time. The best striker in the world at the time. One of the emerging young CMs in world football. Twi technically gifted CAMs (Nasri and Shava) - and a player who could burn you with pace. Then, there was Song who had more vision than Iwobi could ever dream of.

Not to ignore Wenger hadn't gone full r***rd yet.

And to burst the bubble for some, this side was well in a title race in 2011 until it decided to Arsenal things and ended with the most horrific run of results in the final games under Wenger—winning 2 games in the last 10 games of 10/11 season, and finishing 4th in a two-horse race.

This same squad lost the League Cup Final against Birmingham City—a side that was later relegated. Not to ignore that from 2005 until 2013, we only made it to the SFs of the FA Cup on one occasion, 2008-09m, where we lost to Chelsea. Yes, the same season we lost home and away in the CL SFs to ManU in what remains Wenger's third-best accolade in Europe for us.

Nostalgia 101 overload in this thread. We played sexy football back then. Yes. Wenger was in his pomp. Yes. We had technically gifted players. Yes.

But we were still labelled as bottlers. We were bottlers. We would piss our pants everytime we had to face Chelsea or ManU. The only difference is that City and Spurs weren't as strong as they're today. Our downfall in the CL has coincided with Messi's dominance and Bayern's revival in the CL.

Can't ignore facts.

Since selling Cesc and Nasri, we've also been reliant on Ramsey, Xhaka, Arteta, and Flamini - a concept that would have been laughable during the days of Cesc, Rosicky, Hleb, prime Flamini, Nasri, Arshavin, etc. We replaced van Persie with Giroud. From van Persie, we moved to Giroud, who has been great for us with all due respect, but since the comparison is with those players, you have to admit the gulf in class.

To put it into perspective, we haven't had a world class CM since Cesc played there. Cazorla is the closest we've come. We haven't had a world class striker since van Persie. We haven't had technical wizards on the flanks since Shava/Rosicky/Nasri.

We've had three great technical players since then: Cazorla, Alexis, and Ozil. Ozil since 2013. Cazorla since 2012. And Alexis since 2014.

And we have this modern version of Wenger.

Time to take off those nostalgia glasses.

But back then the Top 4 was so strong. We had teams in CL football finals nearly each season. Since then the PL has deteriorated as a whole. You can hardly ever find an EPL club anywhere near the CL final.
