Gael Clichy

From Goal.com

Gael Clichy has spoken of his delight at signing for Manchester City and admitted that he joined the club to win silverware.

The full-back completed his move from Arsenal on Monday afternoon, signing a four-year deal with Roberto Mancini’s side and he has set his sights on winning trophies at Eastlands in the coming years.

“I joined City because I want to win things, and you always progress with competition,” he told the club’s official website.

“It’s going to be difficult but I can’t wait.

“I’m really excited, the stadium is great and I can’t wait to meet the lads. It’s a new life for me, a new chapter but I’m really looking forward to it because it’s an amazing challenge.”

And the Frenchman will be an immediate hit with the club’s supporters following a taunt at the fans of local rivals Manchester United saying: “I understand [City fans] are the people who live in Manchester, so it’s good I won’t be bothered by United fans.”

The 25-year-old admitted he had been impressed with the progress that City have made in the past and hoped things would continue to improve

“Year after year you can see [City] getting stronger and stronger,” he continued.

“Bringing new players in [all the time], the squad is big but it’s not just numbers.

“The names are amazing, there is a group from abroad and group of English players which is important. The fans are crazy and amazing. I hope these four years will be really big.”

The full-back was part of the 'Invincibles' Arsenal side that went through the 2003-04 season unbeaten and Clichy promised to give his new side 100 per cent and show the City fans exactly what he can do.

“I will just try to do my best for the team and defend well,” he admitted.

“To have a strong back four can help a team go all the way in the league and Champions League so I will just try my best to play as I know how to play.

“I have to adjust, I hope we gel quickly and I can’t wait to train and [play my] first game. I will have to work a lot to adapt with new team-mates but I’m sure this will be a few good years for me.

“Speed is one of my qualities, I try to use it as much as possible, and I hope show the fans I’m a great player and a great signing for the club.”

Clichy is the first arrival at City this summer, with many more speculated to be joining him, and the Frenchman admits that he believes the club could begin to dominate English and European football over the coming years, if they continue to develop.

“I don’t think there is a limit in City,” he added.

“What the club is doing is phenomenal, last year was a big year and I hope we carry on progressing like this with the players we have.

“For the club there is no limit, the Champions League is a big competition and it will be difficult as it’s our first time.

“The Premier League is something you want to win because it shows you are the best team, the FA Cup was done last year and hopefully we can repeat it and the Carling Cup is still a good trophy.”

What a kick in the teeth! So all our good players are going to leave because they know that our current squad can't cut it and that we need some serious investment.

I don't think he says anything wrong there.

Hilarious what he says about United fans.

Mercenary W****rs, the fuckin lot of them.

How quickly a new club becomes 'we' eh.

Never got over his mistake at St Andrews, and he was never the same player again. Hope he rots on the bench.

While i don't care about how he does in city, i do agree since Birmingham he became a lot more error prone. I hope Man city enjoy having a left back that will get them into trouble at least once every game.

They've spent 70 million on left backs in just a few years - they are hilarious!

Ha ha nice one.

As I pointed out in the other Clichy thread if he left to win things he could end up humiliated.
He's 25 now and as a pacy LB I can't see him going beyond 29 so he only has 4 years to win a pot. Let's be realistic City aint gonna win the CL in the next 4 years. They're very unlikely to win the Prem in that time as well so that only leaves the FA Cup and a) he's already won that and b) City have just won it so not likely to win it again straight away.

I'm not saying he was more likely to win pots with us I'm just saying he isn't much more likely to win with them.
So I guess it must've just been some other reason.....

City are going to be a top 4 club from now on - whether we like how they are going about it - Liverfluke have shown you don't have to be good to win the CL. If they get a good draw and avoid Barca who knows. As for us this might be our last chance to win the CL for several years...

How can anyone avoid Barca?
If you avoid them early on in the competition you'll only meet them in the final because no-one is going to do you a favour and knock them out for you.
Liverfluke didn't have to contend with a team that's the best in the world by a mile.

My thoughts on the matter exactly mate.

The only competitions that man City have a better chance than us of winning are the FA Cup and The Carling Cup... The shitter cups of the four. City will crash and burn out of Europe and have the same chance of winning the leauge as us.

Just be honest with us Gael and tell us you left for the money, everyone already hates you anyway.

You lot keep believing that. They already have one of the best defences in the league, give Mancini another full season and they will progress even more.

They have a MUCH better chance of winning trophies than we do.

I honestly don't see it.

The only real difference between us and them last season was thier squad depth. They bascially have two players for every position, but our best XI vs thier best XI and there really isn't much difference, but overall we have the better team with players and managers who have more CL and PL experience.

I dont blame Clichy for leaving at all. He was one of our most loyal players trough the years.
2 years back he refused Real Madrid and stuck with us. He played 8 years for us and hasnt won shit, who can blame him for leaving?

City ended above us, and so far, i give them a bigger chance to win things then us. Our starting 11 may be better, but their squad depht is better, and that is what counts.

I wish Clichy nothing but the best! He's a great player and a huge loss for us.
If wenger doesnt get a good replacement, ill add this to my list of reasons why he should be sacked.
Rest in Peace SE13 :(
