Tower Block of Commons

Tower Block of Commons

This has to be one of the best reality shows ever, a bunch of politicians being forced to live on housing estates, including Ian Duncan Smith

I've recorded this to watch it later.
Great idea, they should've done this about 20 years ago. Can you imagine Thatcher's cronies in a council flat?

Still not too late to make Thatcher live in one now as punishment for the right to buy fiasco

Well yes, believe it or not.

It's a well known fact in the 80's Christine Hamilton made off with £30k when she sold her one-time Battersea council flat to one of her yuppie friends only a week after hearing she could buy the place for pittance with right-to-buy.

Tories. They always make the system work for them. :snooty:

my old man loves Thatcher for the right to buy. My parents bought there 3 bedroom house in Hackney and sold it during the property boom and moved to a 3 bedroom house with plenty of profit :)

Your parents were lucky they had a 3 bedroom house, but there are loads of people who have shitty flats in tower blocks on rundown estates that Boone wants to buy and they are stuck their for life, there was a program about it a while ago.

Next weeks show will be looking at South Acton, an area where I spent my most of my teen years hanging around, although was lucky enough not to live there, that estate is a mess.

was we? My Brother, Sister and I had to share a bedroom on the Kingsmead estate as one of our other bedrooms was ridden with dampness. We lived there for 13 years and for 7 years the 3 of us cramped up in a a small bedroom in a flat! After 13 years of trying to get a move we got offered a 3 bedroom house so I think we deserved it to be honest

I think right-to-buy was a good thing.
It gave council families the opportunity to OWN their own property, at a discount which they'd've never been able to afford on the open market.
The discount should've remained on length of time you were a council dweller (hate that phrase) i.e x-amount reduction per year for every year you were a council tenant, rather than the flat rate £12-16k now on offer.

However, where it went bad was that loads of finance companies flooded the market offering ridiculous mortgages based upon ability to pay the mortgage rather than on income earned.

I know loads of folk who took advantage of the lax regulations and got mortagages based upon self-certs.
