They chose to do it.
Were you in a coma during the Ozil contract saga from 2016-2018?
Or in another coma during the Auba contract renewal in 2020?
Or in 2017-18 when wenger was sacked?
Fans pressure on the club was immense during all those episodes..
For Auba and Ozil we constantly heard statements or comments like “Pay him whatever he wants or we will else we will do such and such to the club to show them our displeasure etc….”
With wenger it was “We are tired of him, please get rid of him”. The toxicity around the club was fever pitch. Fans boycotting games, protests etc..
So in my opinion our fanbase pressure and say absolutely played a massive role in all those 3 big decisions.
They didn’t want to lose Ozil for nothing and at the time we’d already lost Sanchez for almost nothing.
As for Wenger, he lasted years and they got rid once we came 6th.
Fans have little or no power unless they stay saying in huge numbers which the fans never did, Arsenals demonstrations were so muted you could hardly call them that, Arsenal fans have never had a stomach for it, hence why the owners pretty much do as they wish.
We re-signed Auba because he was scoring a hatful and we didn’t want to lose him for peanuts and have to spend millions to replace him.
The fans caused the club to offer ridiculous wages to both Ozil and Auba.
The fan pressure and discontent towards wenger in 2018 absolutely caused the club to get rid of him. I wanted wenger out myself but the way the whole fanbase, media etc got on the “Wenger is finished” bandwagon made me feel uneasy. The club caved in. I even remember there were rumours that he might be offered a contract extension in 2017. The pressure got so much that Gazidis took over Auba transfer business in January to save his own backside. Hence he pushed through the Auba signing as wenger was dillying and dallying on the £60 million price tag like always. Rumours were that Gazidis took control of the situation because wenger was being his old self. You don’t remember the Wenger out protest at the stadium? Big banners with “Wenger out”. “Thank you very much for the everything but it’s time to go”. People boycotting home games, the stadium started to look half empty, empty seats with “Wenger out banners and posters covering them”. You could clearly see that the stadium was always half empty but the stadium announcer would cite how the official attendende was 56,231 blah blah, the media then started making fun of it. I remember some Wenger out group hired a plane that flew over the emirates with a massive “Wenger Out” banner etc..
The fanbase pressured the Board to get rid of wenger.
And you don’t need me to elaborate on the whole Ozil contract saga. I have never seen our fanbase that animated, emotional and into their feelings. People were threatening to boycott games, stop buying club merchandise, some were even threatening to get violent, others threatening to vandalise the stadium if Ozil was not given whatever he was demanding. It was repeatedly reported that the club were not willing to offer Ozil more than £250,000 a week in late 2016 early 2017, Özil’s team used our fans emotional attachment to him to their own advantage.
With Auba it was not to the toxic level as the wenger and Ozil sagas but it was the same emotional stuff from our fans..
