Reiss wrote:Losing Auba at that time would have made us a laughing stock and accentuated the narrative of 'arsenal always lose key players'.

Over the years we lost so many players and Auba seemed to be a turning point.

He was literally one of the world's elite strikers. A stat came out last year which said:

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored at least 22 goals in each of his past 5 seasons in LEAGUE GAMES ALONE:

2015/16: 25
2016/17: 31
2017/18: 23
2018/19: 22
2019/20: 22

The only other players in Europe to achieve this feat?

Ronaldo, Messi, and Lewandowski.

So he was literally an elite striker.

However, since then, he has been utter garbage.

Yeah to be honest I don’t think the club had much choice, we’d lost player after player for little or nothing, he was scoring a hatful and losing him for nothing would have been a nightmare for the club and the would have needed to replace him, it was the clubs fault it came to this, but once that was the situation they had little choice.

We just shouldn’t have gotten ourselves in that situation, we should have either resigned him the summer before or sold him.

Were you in a coma during the Ozil contract saga from 2016-2018?

Or in another coma during the Auba contract renewal in 2020?

Or in 2017-18 when wenger was sacked?

Fans pressure on the club was immense during all those episodes..

For Auba and Ozil we constantly heard statements or comments like “Pay him whatever he wants or we will else we will do such and such to the club to show them our displeasure etc….”

With wenger it was “We are tired of him, please get rid of him”. The toxicity around the club was fever pitch. Fans boycotting games, protests etc..

So in my opinion our fanbase pressure and say absolutely played a massive role in all those 3 big decisions.

They didn’t want to lose Ozil for nothing and at the time we’d already lost Sanchez for almost nothing.

As for Wenger, he lasted years and they got rid once we came 6th.

Fans have little or no power unless they stay saying in huge numbers which the fans never did, Arsenals demonstrations were so muted you could hardly call them that, Arsenal fans have never had a stomach for it, hence why the owners pretty much do as they wish.

We re-signed Auba because he was scoring a hatful and we didn’t want to lose him for peanuts and have to spend millions to replace him.

According to the man himself:
Arsène Wenger said he had to step down as Arsenal manager because fan protests over his position portrayed the club negatively around the world.

Speaking for the first time since announcing he would leave the club at the end of the season, the Frenchman said the “Wenger Out” campaign waged by part of the club’s support effectively made his position untenable.

It took years to shift Wenger out and it only happened when we ended up 6th and it took a bit of a power struggle with Gazidis who never seemed to have a say before that.

They obviously had to say something to Wenger to explain why they were letting him go and that explanation was something he couldn’t argue about no doubt, in the end the club decided to get rid, probably more because of its impact on profit than fan pressure though as that’s always the clubs number 1 priority.

As PNG has stated above with Auba the club make their own decisions and have been shown not to listen to the fans, there’s no more AGM as they didn’t want to be questioned, the club just aren’t really that interested in opinions, it’s the finances that are their primary focus.

Yeah agree. The owners don't respond to fan pressure or look at popular opinion. If that were ever the case, they'd have never replaced Wenger with Unai Emery either. He wasn't on anyone's radar. Same goes for the Arteta signing. There wasn't an overwhelming call to sign him up and it wasn't the popular choice.

Wenger is also slightly delusional. The results weren't good enough and there was a lack of accountability for years. Instead of holding his hands up and admitting we needed to do better, there was always an excuse or attempt to defend our league position. The results finally caught up with him when slipping out of the CL. It says a lot that he believes the protests made the club look bad around the world.

Yes I’m with you, there’s so many example of the club not listening to the fans over the years.

Yes Wenger says a lot of things, always has he’s sees things in a strange way at times, like you said instead of putting his hands up and saying he got it wrong and we need to make some changes he’d find a different angle and tell people he’s doing a great job.

Let’s not discard what Wenger actually said.
It’s there in black and white.
Of course, being 6th was the reason the fans were unhappy, but it is they who Wenger reacted to.
If the fans were signing his name and positive about the future, he would not have left and the club would not have even considered letting him go.

As for Auba, doesn’t really matter now anyway.
It was a mistake as we should have known at the time.

If he’d been doing better it’s clear the club wouldn’t have gotten rid, they never did before despite us never progressing.

Theres no doubt fans weren’t happy and that Negev told him it was the reason they had to let him go (he’s been here 20+ years so they needed to give him a decent reason) but I think the realisation that Wenger was on a downward spiral and could no longer deliver CL football was a big factor as they realised at that point they needed to change things.

They gave Wenger a new contract after major protests, the banners and the atmosphere was at it’s most toxic. It's an easy excuse to blame the fans. Falling out of the CL and then failing to win the Europa League was what cost Wenger his job. If he had continued to finish in the top 4, he'd have kept his job.

Should’ve taken 30m from barca at the time and saved ourselves 2 years of shit up front.

Can’t wait til he’s gone, worse legacy here than Ramsey at this rate.

It was crazy giving an ageing player such a huge contract. We keep doing it, Ozil before him, Willian. Possibly Luiz, I don't know how much he was.

I've been saying this since his departure. But some fans like to think their shouting and screaming played a part. It didn't. Stan Kroenke doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks. The shouting and demonstrating over here was a drop in the ocean compared to the shit he got in St Louis when he was moving the Rams. The guy has the hide of a rhinoceros.

You are right. If we had continued to get a CL place Wenger would have kept his job - and he'd probably still be in it.

Don't forget the FA Cup, Community Shield and 92 goals. 5th and 8th in successive PLs , otherwise would be flirting with relegation.

Thant's a good point about the backlash Stan got over moving the Rams. He seems comfortable making unpopular decisions and seeing it through. Thick skin indeed.

Wenger left because the club slowly took control away from him. Gazidis brought in statDNA and started influencing signings, Jonkers was made academy director without Wenger’s consult, I remember they even tried to replace some first team coaches and scouts until Wenger threw a strop. Once we fell out of Europe, and the fan protests got louder, he probably felt it had all become a bit too much. He looked very sad and broken towards the end.

It's a shame. He did so much for the club and he stayed a it too long. There will always be fond memories of him at Arsenal, surely.

Had a pre season under Arteta and his system. The rest is history.

Let him go. Thank him for some great times and winning the cup for us single handedly.

Didn't quite reach the legendary status he wanted with us but after the dreadful Giroud years, it felt nice to have a world class striker in our ranks once more

On we go.

Image

Given Giroud was just as much of a goal threat as Auba and was better at holding the ball up and better defensively than Auba, only Auba fanboys could ever call him world class and then slate Giroud for being shit

At Arsenal, Giroud wins the head to head with Auba.

Scoring 22 goals in a PL season does not make a world class player - and certainly not one worth 350k a week at 31 years of age.
20 is the minimum for a top striker.
The likes of Vardy and Ings do it.

Auba's goal scoring record in the PL is ok, nothing special. Just like Giroud's

We got lumbered with an OK striker getting old, paying him £300k- 350k a week...because of the horrendous decision to give him a new contract.

We re-signed Auba because he was scoring a hatful and we didn’t want to lose him for peanuts and have to spend millions to replace him.

The fans caused the club to offer ridiculous wages to both Ozil and Auba.

The fan pressure and discontent towards wenger in 2018 absolutely caused the club to get rid of him. I wanted wenger out myself but the way the whole fanbase, media etc got on the “Wenger is finished” bandwagon made me feel uneasy. The club caved in. I even remember there were rumours that he might be offered a contract extension in 2017. The pressure got so much that Gazidis took over Auba transfer business in January to save his own backside. Hence he pushed through the Auba signing as wenger was dillying and dallying on the £60 million price tag like always. Rumours were that Gazidis took control of the situation because wenger was being his old self. You don’t remember the Wenger out protest at the stadium? Big banners with “Wenger out”. “Thank you very much for the everything but it’s time to go”. People boycotting home games, the stadium started to look half empty, empty seats with “Wenger out banners and posters covering them”. You could clearly see that the stadium was always half empty but the stadium announcer would cite how the official attendende was 56,231 blah blah, the media then started making fun of it. I remember some Wenger out group hired a plane that flew over the emirates with a massive “Wenger Out” banner etc..
The fanbase pressured the Board to get rid of wenger.

And you don’t need me to elaborate on the whole Ozil contract saga. I have never seen our fanbase that animated, emotional and into their feelings. People were threatening to boycott games, stop buying club merchandise, some were even threatening to get violent, others threatening to vandalise the stadium if Ozil was not given whatever he was demanding. It was repeatedly reported that the club were not willing to offer Ozil more than £250,000 a week in late 2016 early 2017, Özil’s team used our fans emotional attachment to him to their own advantage.

With Auba it was not to the toxic level as the wenger and Ozil sagas but it was the same emotional stuff from our fans..
