Fans pressure on the club was immense during all those episodes..

For Auba and Ozil we constantly heard statements or comments like “Pay him whatever he wants or we will else we will do such and such to the club to show them our displeasure etc….”

With wenger it was “We are tired of him, please get rid of him”. The toxicity around the club was fever pitch. Fans boycotting games, protests etc..

So in my opinion our fanbase pressure and say absolutely played a massive role in all those 3 big decisions.

They didn’t want to lose Ozil for nothing and at the time we’d already lost Sanchez for almost nothing.

As for Wenger, he lasted years and they got rid once we came 6th.

Fans have little or no power unless they stay saying in huge numbers which the fans never did, Arsenals demonstrations were so muted you could hardly call them that, Arsenal fans have never had a stomach for it, hence why the owners pretty much do as they wish.

We re-signed Auba because he was scoring a hatful and we didn’t want to lose him for peanuts and have to spend millions to replace him.

According to the man himself:
Arsène Wenger said he had to step down as Arsenal manager because fan protests over his position portrayed the club negatively around the world.

Speaking for the first time since announcing he would leave the club at the end of the season, the Frenchman said the “Wenger Out” campaign waged by part of the club’s support effectively made his position untenable.

........... yeah, but he could never overcome the base premise of the reality at that time.

That was the window where Kroenke made it clear, there were going to be no funds / absolute minimal would be made available.

Which was my argument at the time, I can find the post where I asked him, ok we sell Auba, now what? we don't have the money to replace a 20 goal per season striker.

Jay's answer was "We don't need a 20 goal a season striker" as you can imagine, that response went down like a ton of bricks with forum members.

So it doesn't matter if he was proved right about the outcome, it doesn't change the fact that we had fk all money to replace him at the time.

The club didn't resign Auba because of fan pressure. What sort of leadership do we have if that's the case? We're laying the boot in on our former captain for poor leadership but we're not going to stop and think about the leadership at the top end if that were true? Unreal. What does that say about how the club is being run?

The club knew how popular he was at the time and especially after the FA Cup win and scoring 29 goals, but they weren't moved off fan pressure. If that were case, there are a lot other moves they'd have folded on due to fan pressure. That Xhaka contract extension would never have happened if they were that weak and impressionable. After getting booed off the pitch and telling the fans to f off, his popularity was rock bottom and they had a chance to sell him to Roma but failed to push the deal through somehow. Next thing you know, he ends up with a new contact. How does that happen? If they were listening to fans on thus sort of thing, Xhaka's career here would have been over long ago.

It's a case of bad planning and indecision from the club and manager. That's how Auba ended up with a new contract. Another example is Lacazette. No fan pressure or anything on Laca, but somehow the club have allowed his contract to run down so he just has a matter of months left. Now they're talking about resigning him. Only now he's being prioritised as the main striker and propped up as captain. No fan pressure at all but this what Arteta wants and we'll see what happens at the end of the season but it's not far off from the Auba situation, except there is no fan pressure and Arteta has confirmed they want to keep him. Laca has already rejected a new offer and we'll see where this goes, but if Laca changes his mind and wants to stay, we'll see what sort of contract he ends up on.

There are more examples. Nketiah being offered a new deal so late in the day is another. The indecision on ANN's status....it's just bad planning on our part and allowing players to get too far down into their contract which leaves us in a poor position with contract negotiations and when it comes to negotiating a sale with another club. We're seeing it for minor fringe players and major senior players. This isn't good planning and I've heard people defend the handling of AMN and Saliba as if it's good business but then turn around and blame the fans for putting pressure on the club when it comes to our leading goal scorer. We shouldn't be getting ourselves into this position. They haven't learned from what happened under Wenger or stuck to that two year contract extension mark.

It's just a case of poor planning and indecision from the club and manager but they're not weak minded enough to be swayed by the fans. If they were trying to appease us with big names and signings, we'd have seen a totally different approach to our summer transfer plans. Big name signings would have been prioritised over these unknown players if they were that worried about fan pressure.

It’s all done and dusted now anyway.
We made a mistake giving him the contract and we need to move one.
Just hope we can get rid of him before next season because we might need to get rid of him before bringing another striker in.

As it turns out though we didn’t need to replace him. I don’t think anyone could have envisaged just how bad Auba would get. I thought maybe 15/16 PL goals a season as he got older. But he’s been Championship level.

The problem is it’s not even Aubas fault entirely. Motivation can’t just be switched on and off. At that age and with that much money it would take pretty much total dedication to football to not slide.

Just hope we never make that kind of error again.
300k plus a week for 3 years at that age is just madness.

They obviously had to say something to Wenger to explain why they were letting him go and that explanation was something he couldn’t argue about no doubt, in the end the club decided to get rid, probably more because of its impact on profit than fan pressure though as that’s always the clubs number 1 priority.

As PNG has stated above with Auba the club make their own decisions and have been shown not to listen to the fans, there’s no more AGM as they didn’t want to be questioned, the club just aren’t really that interested in opinions, it’s the finances that are their primary focus.

Yeah agree. The owners don't respond to fan pressure or look at popular opinion. If that were ever the case, they'd have never replaced Wenger with Unai Emery either. He wasn't on anyone's radar. Same goes for the Arteta signing. There wasn't an overwhelming call to sign him up and it wasn't the popular choice.

Wenger is also slightly delusional. The results weren't good enough and there was a lack of accountability for years. Instead of holding his hands up and admitting we needed to do better, there was always an excuse or attempt to defend our league position. The results finally caught up with him when slipping out of the CL. It says a lot that he believes the protests made the club look bad around the world.

Let’s not discard what Wenger actually said.
It’s there in black and white.
Of course, being 6th was the reason the fans were unhappy, but it is they who Wenger reacted to.
If the fans were signing his name and positive about the future, he would not have left and the club would not have even considered letting him go.

As for Auba, doesn’t really matter now anyway.
It was a mistake as we should have known at the time.

Theres no doubt fans weren’t happy and that Negev told him it was the reason they had to let him go (he’s been here 20+ years so they needed to give him a decent reason) but I think the realisation that Wenger was on a downward spiral and could no longer deliver CL football was a big factor as they realised at that point they needed to change things.

No, Wenger made his feelings and thoughts very clear.
He decided to step down because of fan pressure - and yes, that fan pressure came because we were not doing well enough.

Anyway - it's the Auba thread.
We had a lot of fans going OTT on Auba, completely wrapped up in the PR. They were wrong to claim he was a necessity and that we should 'give him anything he wants'. Huge mistake.
The club, without doubt, made a huge PR deal about the new contract to win favour with the fans - and there is zero doubt that Auba played the game with the fans to strengthen his hand in negotiations. Whether the club ended up giving him more money and a longer deal to make him stay partly because of fan pressure is a matter of opinion. Mine is that it most certainly played a part.

It took years to shift Wenger out and it only happened when we ended up 6th and it took a bit of a power struggle with Gazidis who never seemed to have a say before that.

If he’d been doing better it’s clear the club wouldn’t have gotten rid, they never did before despite us never progressing.

They gave Wenger a new contract after major protests, the banners and the atmosphere was at it’s most toxic. It's an easy excuse to blame the fans. Falling out of the CL and then failing to win the Europa League was what cost Wenger his job. If he had continued to finish in the top 4, he'd have kept his job.

No problem with him getting a contract. As mentioned, he was one of the best around and he was on fire.

Had a pre season under Arteta and his system. The rest is history.

Let him go. Thank him for some great times and winning the cup for us single handedly.

Didn't quite reach the legendary status he wanted with us but after the dreadful Giroud years, it felt nice to have a world class striker in our ranks once more

On we go.

If Auba does not play again Giroud is ahead of him on pretty much every stat for a striker at Arsenal.

The only number Auba wins is mins per goal and that is very close.. 152 minutes to 154 minutes.

It was absolutely obvious that it was a mistake giving Auba a new contract. His finishing was suspect even when he was scoring 22 PL goals, which is good but not great. The reason he never had a truly great PL season for us is because of all those missed chances.

His attitude was always suspect too. He’d had a history of problems before we ever signed him.

To give a player like that such a contract was madness and a few, not just me, realised it.

I just hope we can now get rid of him.
Certainly not a legend of this club. Giroud status or lower.

Lol

The hatred from an "arsenal fan" towards an arsenal player is clear as day
