I can imagine ESR thinking the same when Arteta put him in as a false 9 to bamboozle Villarreal.

There#s a lot of luck factor involved in these clise games. Gundogan had been scoring plenty of goals in league games, so using him in false 9 wasn't that bad of a move.
Think both our strikers were either unwell or less match fit, hence ESR was tried in 1st leg. We should have beaten Villareal handily if Auba hadn't missed number of very easy chances in leg2. No matter how you win, afterwards all is forgiven, like our win against Chelsea. We played badly, but afterwards " a win is a win".

Elneny would have done a better job then, as he's actually scored goals before. Playing ESR there just meant we weren't able to move the ball around in midfield or create any chances. ESR hadn't even scored a league goal at that point; it was irresponsible for a manager to put a kid in charge of scoring in a European semifinal.

Yeah also it’s easy to say that if Aubameyang had put away a chance or two we’d have won, but Villereal should have scored possibly 3 goals in the 1st leg with the chances they had.

If everyone scored all their good chances they would have still won as they schooled us in the 1st leg.
