There is probably a moral element to consider as well as principles, and personally I wouldn't bother, but given the recent Bielsa furore at Leeds, and the 'do whatever it takes to win' professional football mentality as exists, it made me wonder.

There's probably some vague and broad clause that covers it like "clubs must act in good faith towards each other". Besides, do they even have that regulation saying that loanees can't play against their parent club in UEFA competition?

Il Martino via Sportwitness
It’s decided: Club will ignore clause and buy Arsenal player – Want to reduce pre-agreed price

Currently in Colombia for family reasons, David Ospina will not be returning to Napoli after the club granted him an extended leave beyond the end of the campaign.

This is what Il Mattino are reporting on Thursday morning, meaning the Arsenal loanee will not get a chance to play in the last two games to take his number of appearances to 25 and therefore won’t trigger the automatic release clause in his deal that would see him stay in the south of Italy permanently.

However, the Serie A club don’t intend to let that stand in their way, as it’s been decided the Colombia international will be remaining at San Paolo Stadium next season regardless.

The Italian newspaper explain that Napoli, who paid an original €500k for the loan and were expected to fork out €3.5m after 25 appearances, will sit down with Arsenal to negotiate another deal.

It’s pointed out the Gunners aren’t interested in keeping Ospina around next season, meaning a permanent exit this summer is their desire, and Aurelio de Laurentiis is willing to help them achieve that.

Il Mattino believe Napoli will want to lower the price to around €2m, but the meeting between the two clubs has yet to take place, so there’s no way of knowing how Arsenal will react to that offer.

Alex Meret is expected to remain as the starter next season, with Ospina playing rotation with the young goalkeeper, but he knows, especially after how things have gone this season, he’ll get far more time in Naples than he would returning to the Emirates.

That, and he really like the south of Italy.

Arsenal prepared to accept less than £4million they had previously agreed with Napoli to sell David Ospina.

I'm told the permanent transfer is close to being completed.

We've been absolutely played

Looks to me like Napoli have deliberately subverted the original deal

f**k them. Recall Ospina. Make an example of Napoli so other clubs know we're not to be f***ked with

He's in Naples today to finalise the deal. €4m fee.

Thanks for your service at the club, David. Never thought he would be good enough to be first-choice, but was generally a fairly reliable second-choice. His lack of height for a GK always concerned me though and unfortunately it proved to be the case in several games.

Helped us win 2 FA Cups.

I wish him well for the rest of his career.

Ah. Twitter lied to me. My bad.

Either way, he's expected to be leaving us in the coming days.

At least it trims down our wage bill more.

DiMarzio said that Napoli are willing to pay for €4m Euro fee, I don’t think he needs to travel back to complete the deal

Good deal for everyone. He gets his permanent move, even more wages off our books and an extra 4m towards our own deals.

I wish him the best of luck. He was heavily involved in 2 FA cup runs and I will forever be grateful for him helping to bring back silverware to the club

Good luck to the guy.

Now let's hope Genoa and Empoli reach an agreement for the sale of Ismael Bennacer.

We'll receive 30% of the transfer fee through a sell-on clause.

Fee is expected to be around €12m, so that's another incoming ~€4m.
