Sol Campbell spent several years under George Graham at Tottenham first of all, so he was essentially a George Graham player who could pass on his expertise to those around him just as Tony Adams used to do. Plus, as others have said, Vieira and co. learned much of their trade around the old guard, so they could pass on what they learnt to the newer players, and Keown was still in the squad at least during The Invincible's.

On top of this we used to play counter attacking football back when we used to win titles, meaning we could normally defend in numbers and focus on our positioning, instead of getting horribly exposed like we do now. Plus we could take advantage of the space the opposition left behind with some of the quickest players the league has ever seen, like Thierry Henry. Now we have Giroud up front, who has the speed of a slug.

So Wenger abandoned the tactics that made him successful in order to become a poor man's Barcelona, and has never looked back to what made him successful in the first place. Let's not forget that Leicester won the league last season playing counter attacking football with a set up very much like the one we used to have (Vardy instead of Henry, Huth and Morgan instead of Adams and Keown, etc etc).

Thats what he intended to do all along, is anybody really surprised???

Not really. He likes to avoid any criticism theae days by any means possible, from giving answers like a politician to storming out of conferences.

A good coach, not a great one. Sadly now past his sell-by date (at Arsenal anyway, if PSG want him they can have him)

^ & the long one

Much nicer to read your posts when you're actually calm MG

Reported by FT so doubt it'd be fake, it is from a month ago though (the bid)

The Mountain that Rides wrote:Obviously good movement and creating overloads is anathema to good defensive positioning, especially if the players are just told to express themselves and figure things out when they haven't been given any of the tools needed to recognise what a tactically astute manager is up to - because Wenger lacks these tools himself.

Good positional sense would need to be coached into their attacking play, and Wenger has no clue how to do this, nor even the ability to recognise that this is necessary. Plus good communication is necessary to defend well and, unlike Tony Adams, our current players are the sort to mime along to national anthems, not belt them out like Tony Adams used to do. Which is indicative of their attitude towards shouting to each other about picking up runners, positioning etc as well. They're just not outgoing enough to do what is needed.

I guess my main point is, defensive positioning etc. is a bit more coachable than attacking. defending is essentially providing pressure with cover and balance that protects line to goal and space to goal. it's a universally coached approach to defending. the only two dogmas that oppose each other are whether to sit & absorb (w/counter attack) or to press high in the opponents half to gain possession closer to our attacking goal.

attacking on the other hand can be looked at in so many different ways, much more than defending. and yes while positioning is coached, it's the movements and interchange of play that become more complicated. and the success of the attack is based on the intelligence of the players.

so in short, I can take a bunch of half wits, train them to defend better than I can with the same half wits to train them to attack. that's why I'm confused as to why wenger is struggling to establish some semblance of a solid defensive approach.
cheers!

James Olley‏@JamesOlley
Usmanov has made a big offer to buy #afc but Kroenke not keen on selling as it stands. Improved offer or no CL could change things.

With competition is higher than ever Stan can see that top4 is a not sure thing so every year CL wont gonna happen which would decrease his demand.
