Whatever happened to the notion of someone being judged according to their character rather than their skin colour? Using that criteria, no black actor was good enough. Simple as.

Yep. But apparently it's institutional racism.

Cue mock outrage, demands for change and faux black activism by Jada and Will Smith.

Can't wait for the tokenism to begin.

Think you've both got the whole thing wrong there.

Except the Academy has a history of being institutionally racist and has snubbed numerous black actors and directors over the years. This isn't a one-off year, it's par for the course. There's a fair few this year who deserved a nomination this year for sure - Michael B. Jordan in Creed and Idris Elba in Beasts of No Nation being two of the most glaring examples - and last year it was an absolute farce that Bradley Cooper got the nod for American Sniper ahead of David Oyelewo for Selma, who probably should have won the damn thing.

That said, I do think the issue is more with Hollywood as a whole rather than the Oscars. There's definitely a massive lack of opportunities for minorities.

But is racism.
And the examples are everywhere. Just need to look at it.

Example A - who was cast as the main character in the Prince of PERSIA movie? You guess it - a white guy - no outrage.
Example B - a black kid cast as a stormtrooper in Star Wars - HUGE outrage.

It's also worth looking at how many minority actors get roles that are gender-neutral, because that's where they don't get much of a look-in. If you look at the black actors the Academy have recognised in recent years, for example, it's for playing slaves, or Somali pirates, or portraying another black person in a biopic. It's rare in a major movie you'll see a black actor in a role where the colour of his skin is not relevant to his character's story.

If not playing a crock, dealer, civil rights protester, butler or slave good luck to you.

But that's not soo much to do with the Academy but Hollywood and the nature of the business.

All characters (AFAIK) in the computer game series were white so why should they change it in the movie which is based on the games ?!

yeah i know, i think it's based on the latest games though and the dude definitely looks to have a persian tinge

the first few games look like some sort of theatre act that an x factor waster would appear in

Yeah, after looking at the odds last night I am quite surprised by a few of them. Could've made some serious money on Sam Smith too.

Rylance beating Sly was a relative shock, as was Spotlight beating The Revenant to Best Picture.
