Bury expelled from the Football League

Postby UFGN » Tue Aug 27, 2019 10:26 pm

Bury have been expelled by the English Football League after a takeover bid from C&N Sporting Risk collapsed.

The League One club had been given until 17:00 BST on Tuesday to complete the deal, having been granted an extension to Friday's initial deadline.

Bury are the first team to drop out of the EFL since Maidstone's liquidation in 1992.

League One will comprise of 23 clubs for the rest of the season, with only three teams to be relegated.

"Today is undoubtedly one of the darkest days in the league's recent history," said EFL executive chair Debbie Jevans.

"I understand this will be a deeply upsetting and devastating time for Bury's players, staff, supporters and the wider community. There is no doubt today's news will be felt across the entire football family."

Its a dark day for all football fans. Bolton on the brink as well.

Its not only the first team that is lost of course, but the youth set up of the club, the jobs of the people who work there, the local businesses like cafes who rely on matchday income

Clubs like Bury are what set English football aside from most other countries. We have a huge amount of history and a huge emotional investment in our football clubs, large and small. A huge football infastructure that is part of British culture.

We all lose if a club like Bury dies.

Talk about having the soul ripped out of your community.

I hope they somehow manage to rebuild and make it back.

That arsehole bought it for a quid with a view to making money on it, then ran it into the ground

The EFL should introduce laws that they can forcibly take control of clubs in that position, then hand it over to fans' consortiums.

Fans had a chance to put a consortium together

The problem is clubs at that level have large overheads and, especially in the North West where there are so many clubs, not enough fans to put money in the tills

Thats a stark reality with very few solutions

Football was built originally as a community based game.

Sadly great, old historic community clubs like Bury are no longer viable in 2019 and haven't been sustainable since the mid 00's. The truth is football is not a game for the community anymore. It's all about money and has been like this for at least 20-25 years but now the charade cannot go on any longer.

Its not just that they didn't have enough fans to stay afloat but the other more scary truth is the 2000s millennial generation don't care much anymore about local clubs and instead care all about the top clubs they see plastered 24/7 on social media and in the FIFA and PES games etc...

Nobody from the younger generations have the ambition anymore to be the hometown community hero which is what football was all about, love for the game, sport and the community.

What I'm saying now is important because sadly Bury will be the first of many. A european super league is inevitable and only a matter of time in the next 3-5 years.

Just think, every year from now on at least 1-2 clubs in the lower divisions will liquidate? It will destroy the entire football league structure. Every club needs those around them to survive, every League 1 club has now lost money and revenue because they have not been able to play Bury home or away. See the domino effect which has now begun. Its essentially a footballing purge.

Sorry to say but along with what we are seeing politically these are dark days indeed.

That’s actually a really sad post. Probably true as super league talk has been going around for a bit, but sad.

Like all professional sport money gets out of control at its highest point and never seems to filter enough to the bottom or grass roots,
