99 United vs vs 04 Arsenal vs. 05 Chelsea vs. 18 City

Postby Va-Va-Voom » Sun May 06, 2018 9:32 pm

Saw this on RedCafe yesterday and it's a good topic so I'm plagiarizing it, dgaf.

Here is the OP -

There have been a few tremendous achievements in football over the years.

The treble winning United, invincible Arsenal, current prem points record Chelsea, and City looking set to beat them.

There are arguments in favour of all, United had the most games to win a treble, Arsenal unbeaten, Chelsea top pointers with solid competition in United and Arsenal. Then City this year might be argued to have lesser competition or lesser performing competition, but they look set to smash the points tally.

Who is the best? And a slightly separate question but who would win in a round robin tournament?

For PL:
Arsenal = City* > Chelsea >> United

For all competitions:
United >> Arsenal > Chelsea = City

*This is assuming City reaches 100 points.

A treble trumps all (other than a quadruple obviously but no one has achieved that), and a triple digit point total can be as impressive as an undefeated season.

To anyone who believes the Invincibles will always be the GOAT because of zero losses, I ask a hypothetical: Is 26-12-0 more impressive than 37-0-1? If your answer is yes, then is 0-38-0 also more impressive? At what point does being undefeated become the paragon?

Have to say United's as they had to overcome so much adversity and ridiculous competition through 3 competitions, they was a miracle lucky though

Every achievement has luck. I voted for 99 because I don't believe it will ever be repeated. They won a tough league with some very good teams, won a Champions League with some ridiculously good teams, and picked up the FA Cup in the process. Shame Ferguson bailed on the League Cup, as it's probably the closest we'll ever come to a genuine quadruple, but perhaps Ferguson knew that his players wouldn't last all four trophies.

If we're looking at the Premier League only, then 18 City has no comparison. More points, more goals, more everything.

Then 04 Arsenal, then 99 United.

If we're looking overall, 99 United is the best.

If we're looking as an achievement, then 04 Arsenal has never been repeated.

I think it'll be 18 City because this is possibly the start of a dynasty, the likes of which might never be seen again once Pep goes.

I would say it's entirely possible these two achievements will never be repeated. I thought Man City just might become the 'better' invincibles, but it just shows what a feat Arsenal were able to pull off under Wenger when his head was still in the right place.

Not a fan of the Invincibles 'tag' particularly, but it's fair to say, Arsenal that season were fantastic.

The thing is, the other two teams went on to win the league the season after too. Went on to dominate. It is criminal that we didn’t build on the invincibles and go on to dominate. Even with the stadium debt we didn’t need to sell them off so quickly.

Their relationship got better after our CL loss to ManU in 2009.

Wenger was unlucky. We were unlucky.

We've always been unlucky as compared to Liverpool and ManU.

I feel so sad that Wenger and Arsenal had to depart without winning a European trophy. Destiny.

Exactly!

Angelito, I don't think you can just call it luck. Those players were good enough to form a core for us for a few years yet back then. 30 years is hardly some extremely huge age. Look at Terry, he managed to stay at a top level till nearly 34. Gerrard managed to be a top, top player almost winning the title at the age of 33. We disbanded the Invincibles way too quickly.

cole was an abysmal deal, campbell went for free and came back later, we could have could done special things in 07/08 with a few of the invincibles around, that team must lacked a bit of exp, imagine that team with henry still, we didn't get much money for him, 07/08 should have been wengers best team imo
