Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs’ move to Watford was scrapped because he didn’t want to take a wage cut.

Contrary to reports, the Hornets were confident of reaching a compromise on the Gunners’ £16million valuation for the England left-back.

It is understood, however, Gibbs was unwilling to compromise on his £80,000-a-week wages.

It left new Watford boss Marco Silva and the Hornets’ hierarchy bemused as Gibbs is third choice at Arsenal behind new left-back Sead Kolasinac and Nacho Monreal.

Daily Mirror

No wonder our team didn't win anything the past years. Most of them are in it just for the money. They don't care, if they don't play. They aren't interested in developing themselves.

Jenkinson, Gibbs, Debuchy and the list goes on. And wenger was stupid enough to offer them such wages

Championship level player. It's a disgrace he's been allowed to start over 137 games for Arsenal. I'm genuinely embarrassed.

When he does finally piss off and go to another prem club he won't last more than a year there before championship/league 1 will take him.

Arsenal have agreed a £5m ($6.5m) fee with Watford for the transfer of Kieran Gibbs as they look to trim their squad ahead of the end of the transfer window. Arsene Wenger has repeatedly been quoted as saying that the Gunners need to let players go before making new additions as they cannot sustain as big a squad as they currently have.

ESPN reports that despite the agreement on fees, there is still the question of agreeing personal terms with the defender which may well prove to be a stumbling block for the Hornets. The London-born defender graduated to Arsenal's senior squad in 2007 but has only started 11 Premier League matches over the last two seasons after falling behind Nacho Monreal in Arsene Wenger's plans.

We were demanding 15m at the beginning of the window. How shit are we

Probably done so that Watford can use the 10 million to pay his extravagant wages. We need to get rid, the money is really secondary at this point. Look at our squad size, ffs, we really need to trim quite a few. The more that leave, the better. I have no hope under Wenger, but when he does leave, a smaller squad is better than a bigger shitter one

Hmmm..

So, Gibbs for £5m, Lucas for £14m, Gabriel for £10m, Szczesny for £13m.

Net spend = £3.5m.

Let's make it more fun.

Mustafi for £20m + Chamberlain for £35m.

Net spend = -£51.5m

A successful season to say the least. :1990_dancing.gif:

I agree that money is secondary in this circumstances.
But If we had demanded 10m at the beginning of the summer, we would have probably sold him by now.
We overpriced him and just now a fee days before the transfer window closes we realise that we should demand less. We are just so stupidly managed. Almost everything doesn't make sense. 90% of the people on the forum would be probably doing a better job in taking decisions at the club than Wenger and the board are.

Maybe we can extend our success by accepting a late 50m bid for Alexis

10m discount .... so in effect we will be paying 40k of his 80k salary for the next five years (250 weeks) .... we're so feckin' clever !!!!!!!

Shouldn't the question be asked, which deluded numpty put him on 80k in the first place?

Wrong, we'll be getting rid of his wages, and getting money on top of it

Gibbs was an English international who looked like he was getting better and better. Then completely stopped growing. Those wages were justified then. Anyway, at least we're getting rid of him
