Wayne Rooney becomes England's record goalscorer

Postby UFGN » Tue Sep 08, 2015 11:04 pm

Wayne Rooney has a lot more to come after becoming England's top goalscorer, according to previous record holder Sir Bobby Charlton.

Rooney, 29, scored in the Euro 2016 qualifying win over Switzerland to overtake Charlton's record of 49.

Directly addressing Rooney, Charlton said: "It is a record that I am sure you will hold for a long time.

"And it is clear to see that you will go on scoring for your club and country for a long time to come.

Rooney was given his debut by Sven-Goran Eriksson in February 2003, coming on as a half-time substitute against Australia. Just six months later, he became England's youngest scorer, netting in a Euro 2004 qualifier against Macedonia.

His 50 goals have come in 107 caps - one game more than Charlton.

Congratulations Wayne. All club rivalries aside, its a great achievement.

You can't knock it although when you add amount of games, pens, goals against average teams and competition record it is ok.

Compared to Owen who scored in major knockout games. Far better record, still congrats anyway.

Our highest scorer in qualifications.

Just hasn't done it in the tournaments bar 2004.

Not sure about him. He's clearly a decent player but a legend? Nah. I'd still take Owen ahead of him. Lineker as well. Never saw the Greaves or the Charltons of that era.

He's the best of a bad bunch.

It's not his fault really, he's been mismanaged his whole career so was never able to fulfil his massive potential

That's a fair assessment but he is still only 29

Owens career was destroyed by injuries

This just highlights why England haven't been close to competitive in any Competitions or won't be for the foreseeable future.

Wayne Rooney, top all time goal scorer.

For England possibly.

His united record is sensational though def not a fraud at club level.

You look at the other top scorers around. Klose has what around 70? Keane, Robbie f***ing Keane has 60+ I think. Cristiano Ronaldo has 55 playing wide most of the time.

So how good is this achievement really?

I thought 49 as a record was pretty low tbh. Great achievement by Bobby cos he wasn't a striker but since then bar Lineker who should have beaten it our strikers are little bit shit on the national front or injury prone.

Owen had he stayed fit would comfortably had beaten it and be 60+ by now. Had Shearer not retired so soon, he probably would have passed it. Any decent striker who got 100 caps or more should go on and beat it and wazza has. World class and legend? No. Decent? Yes.

He'll have the record for a while cos I don't think the guy to beat it is born yet.

Kane has 3 in 4 but he won't have the longevity to pass it.

His United record is shit; only scored 20+ league goals twice in his career.

League goal tally since he's been at United -

11
16
14
12
12
26
11
27
12
17
12
0 (so far this season)

Abysmal for a supposed top striker.

He is a ten a lot of the time. Ozil wouldn't hit double figures in league once.

I think abysmal is going way too far there, even in his worst seasons he's still hitting double figures. That's not easy. He's not at the elite level and never really has been but there have been seasons where's he's been absolutely brilliant.

It really isn't difficult to hit double digits when you're United's striker.

He's a sub 15 goal player most seasons, that is poor.
