It's not even physically possible to shoot a 16:9 aspect ratio video with a camera that records in a totally different aspect ratio of 13:11.

144p, 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p, 2k, 4k are all 16:9 ratio resolutions.

Nokia N90 shoots in this rare and outdated 13:11 ratio with its 352x416 pixels camera.

When uploaded, there would be a black border on the left and right side as the ratio of the video file wouldn't match the ratio of the web player.

In other words, you couldn't be more wrong.

Only left and right, but still 240p

That's because YouTube's web player has a fixed aspect ratio of 16:9.

Key word: fixed

YouTube's player includes these black borders, even though they are not part of the original video file. Cameras don't shoot black borders.

This means if a raw video file with a different aspect ratio is uploaded, the player adds black borders on each side in order to turn it into what is called a false 16:9 video.

If you were to play the raw video file above in windowed mode of any media player on your computer, you wouldn't see any borders as you're viewing it in its original, true 13:11 aspect ratio.
