Heading in Football

Postby alexafc12 » Mon Jul 18, 2022 2:20 pm

Couldn't fine a thread.

What are people's thoughts ?

Are we going to move to a game where we outlaw heading the ball ?

FA to trial removal of heading at all age groups under 12. Trial approved by IFAB and, if successful, heading could be removed from these age groups entirely in time for 2023-24 season

Great way to destroy any future player. getting over the fear of hitting the ball with your head is a big fear to overcome as a kid.. setting them up for failure.

I'm fine with this. Heading is a minor part of football yet it risks doing disproportionate damage to player's cognitive abilities.

Shearer's memory will be Swiss cheese in 10 years' time, and that's with top-class healthcare. 99% of academy kids won't make it, so their brains are their most important asset.

In the professional game, I don't like having disruptive play stoppages each time there's a head-to-head collision, but we have no choice due to events like Ryan Mason and Raul Jimenez fracturing their skulls in front of 40,000 people. In Mason's case it ended his career.

Defenders are probably most at risk, because they are heading the ball 3X as much as forwards. Just get rid of it.

How do you even get rid of it. its hardwired into any footballer and the game would look like a clown show on corners/free kicks.

what if someone accidentally heads a ball in the box? its a penalty than? no shot this ever happens.

So no more long balls. No more crossing. Football is dying

Balls are much safer and lighter than they were from the era of the people who are dying

Ridiculous this is

That is rubbish. I understand why but it means big lumps like me who have already had to stop kicking people won't be able to use our height either!

Yeah, it's like having boxing ban punching to the head. Still technically the same sport but a massive part of the game is taken away.

The tima taka types would love it though.

Exactly

You can't manage all risk out of sport.

You can mitigate risk but you can't stop it. Sure, have loads of safety gear in racing cars, but hey, if you're unlucky you're still going to die

Should we stop ballet because people end up with horrible hip and ankle injuries and eating disorders?

Hopefully it's just at youth level (which I can understand) although doesn't the brain keep developing until 25 ?

Perhaps there is some science to support protecting players at younger ages where it could do more damage long term.

At what point does someone suggest protective headgear ?

Yeah it'll probably never fully happen, and years from now we'll see widespread litigation that the NFL is facing due to ignoring the impact of CTEs.

We got rid of players grappling with each other during corners within a year's time. Referee warning for the first offense, yellow card second offense.

If players can do repetitive drills day after day to automate behaviors, they can use it to phase headers out too.
