All Time English Cricket XI

Same as the all time World one. (And we'll be doing this for all the major Nations)

Up to you if you want to nominate someone from the past, or if you wish to nominate someone you have seen.

We'll start with the opening batsmen.

Highest nominations go to a poll unless we have winners.

So we need two opening batters to start with, nominate now......

Avg's:

Gooch 42.58
Boycott 47
Amiss 46
Compton 50
Hobbs 56.94
Sutcliffe 60.73
Edrich 43
Hutton (though could be a number 3) 56.67

Personally i always select my teams based on more modern players as i believe the standard of bowling/fielding has improved so much (note the massive averages back in the 30's-50's). imo a player averaging 40 in the 90's was probably a better batsman than someone who averaged 50 in the 50's. But that's just me speculating and i can understand the argument that it's all relative to the era they played in.

As a result i'll select Sutcliffe and Hobbs.
Although i was tempted to go compton as he's a gooner.

I know most of the players that I will be nominating. For an all time England XI there are quite a few players who are stand-out choices.

Jack Hobbs

Herbert Sutcliffe (Len Hutton would be a good alternative but Hobbs and Sutcliffe are an established partnership)

Wally Hammond (He has to be in the team in the same way that Bradman had to be in the World XI)

Ken Barrington

Ian Botham

Alec Stewart

Derek Underwood

Fred Trueman

Syd Barnes

Gooch has to be in there for me, then I'm a bit lost. (That majestic 333 Vs India)

Boycott? Too slow.

Tavare? As above.

Brearley? Possibly

Amis? Maybe

Atherton? Possible

Stewart? Maybe better further down the order

Strauss? Certainly improving lately

Decisions decisions

Do you mean Chris "Lescargot" Tavare, he shouldn't even get into an all-time village cricketers XI, he made Boycott and Lawry look like greased lightning.

says alot about english cricket that the vast majority of the side are pre 1960's.

stewart as a stand out is a strange one. knott would be keeper and gower and hutton should surely be definates ahead of stewart in terms of pure batsmen. that's not to say stewart wasn't great.

as we're going 'all time' i'll include some oldies to my team:

hobbs
sutcliffe
hutton
gower
hammond
barrington
Botham
Knott
Willis
Underwood
Trueman

Well, I named 9 players there and 5 of those nine played test cricket post 196O

Barrington, Botham, Stewart, Underwood and Trueman. I would include Stewart because his keeping was excellent and he averaged 39 which is only 3 short of Graham Gooch who averaged 42. I wouldn't try to claim that his keeping was as good as Alan Knott but Knott only averaged 32.

His 200 knock at Edgbaston was one of the finest innings I have witnessed. In comparison, he took less than 300 balls for his knock, yet Boycott hit (I think) 150 in almost 400. I'm certain it was in Birmingham against India, but struggling for the year. Late 70's, possibly early 80's.

-------------

Anyhow, we are looking for an opening partnership folks, not the entire XI!

--------

As stated in previous threads, I'm basing mine of players I have seen. I'm sticking with Gooch and thinking I should add Atherton to that. I would say Stewart, but along with Knotty was one of the better wicketkeepers over the years. But that debate is for a thread later.

SE I quite understand that you want to base your selections on players that you have seen but it is the "All Time" England XI . Incidentally although I am the Methuselah of Goonersworld I would like to point out that I never actually saw Hobbs Sutcliffe Hammond or Barnes. :rofll:

Yeah, totally agree with you, the whole thread(s) are about peoples opinions. I just feel that I can only base mine on players I have seen.

Each to their own though, it's all about your ideas, not mine!
