Don Howe had left the club, and Arsenal were now managerless. Meanwhile over in South London, one of the heroes of the 71 Double winning season was manager at Millwall. George Graham was approached and appointed manager, with almost immediate success. He built from the back, and in time the famous rear-guard was built.

Arsenal faced Liverpool in The League Cup Final at Wembley in 1988, and ran out 2-1 winners. Graham had brought silverware in his first season in charge, and the future was once again looking good. This was also the first time Arsenal had lifted the three handled trophy, so now had a collection of all the domestic honours. Defending the cup went all the way to Wembley, where Luton Town were the opponents. Arsenal lost by a 3-2 margin, but two finals in two years kept the supporters optimistic.

The 1988 final was against Luton not Liverpool.
We lost the 1988 final against Luton and the final against Liverpool was in 1987.
