Keywords Day 8

Postby Trina » Tue Dec 09, 2008 9:06 pm

Have a few days of catching up to do, lol. Thanks to All_Arsenal for this one :)

Arsenal were a club in Decline, and something was needed to turn the fortunes around. Billy Wright had been sacked, and the club turned to the inexperienced Bertie Mee. His only real involvement prior to this was as the club physio. Once again, the rebuilding of Arsenal had begun. 1968 saw Arsenal reach Wembley in The League Cup. High flying Leeds United won the game 1-0. But Bertie Mee was slowly reversing the fortunes of Arsenal, and would build on this failure. The following season, Arsenal reached Wembley again for The League Cup. Their opponents were third division Swindon Town. Surely the first silverware for over a decade? Sadly not, as Arsenal crashed to a 3-1 defeat.

Bertie Mee had been keeping an Eye on youth, Arsenal having won The Youth Cup, and it was these youngsters he turned to. In particular, a young talent by the name of Charlie George. The team was building nicely, with the like of Frank McLintock, Ray Kennedy, Pat Rice and John Radford among others helping Arsenal along.
