I suspect the way Arteta will use him is he drops into a back three out of possession and into midfield when in possession. The way he used Xhaka from time to time. This allows the full back to get up the pitch and overload the opposition defender. It’s not a bad idea if you do it well.
It's basic and not new. Back in the day it was Vieira that would take the ball off the CB's advance the ball then it was Cesc. We sW Rosicky play the role later in his career and then Cazorla. You buy a special talent CM and he'll conduct the play from deep and make life easier for the CB's. We just signed Partey and Lokonga and it seems a waste if we're going to depend on the CB's passing skills instead of a CM that can also dribble and pass.
I think you missed my point. This is nothing like Cesc and Vieira. This is about keeping one of the full back very high up the pitch to create an overload on one side of the pitch. To do that you need a third CB. But when in possession having a flat back three is pointless and the CB joins up with the midfield. Pep also tries this. It looks good when it’s pulled off.
It's too much emphasis on shape and phases instead of what players are required for that to work on the pitch. What you're describing sounds like when we're playing in the opponents half and have them penned into their box. Similar to our early games in the Europa league. It's good in theory but we don't have the same sort of talent as City in attack and just seems nuts building that way.
Under Wenger we had no problem playing high in our opponents half, pinning them in and creating overlaps. We would just get sucker punched on the counter a lot because of poor defending. I'd understand this sort of purchase if we were playing Wengerball not this sort of football under Arteta where attacks seem lifeless.
