I think the key thing is we do have defensive minded players, especially now Elneny has returned and Guendouzi looks to be going nowehere, who obviously aren't close to Partey's level but they offer something in that position. Ozil aside, we have no creativity in the midfield when it comes to chance creation and goalscoring threat. Which is why I think Aouar is a greater priority.

Looks like Arteta has his priorities straight.

He has improved Xhaka and trusts Elneny more than Emery did. Both those players can put in a better defensive shift now than they could a year ago. Ceballos and Willian can handle moving the ball upfield.

We need a playmaker more than anything else. Our top assister is an 18yo kid that gets benched every other game.

Depends how we set up.

In a 3-4-3 the creativity comes through the wingers and Wing backs, see Pepe's cross to Auba.

You don't need as much or any creativity through the middle in a 3-4-3, what you need is the mid 2 CM's to be able to work hard, track back, tackle and be very good ball to feet or to have a range of passing.

Aouar could still fit if he has a DM next to him but we'll have to see.

last season our issues were beating a low block because we had no source of creativity using the 3atb. xhaka & ceballos progress play, last season they had no-one to progress it to to unlock defences in the final third

admittedly we now have willian who is v good at that but im not sure it's enough for a top 4 finish

signing aouar means we're able to go back to a 4atb, and given we're going to be ball dominant for 80% of games this season we should now be alright transition into a defensive shape starting off with a 4atb, it's one of our biggest strengths arteta has implemented - our forward press & defence in transition is great

(not quite sure but when we started 4atb last season, didn't xhaka drop deep when saka/KT went forward? trying to remember what the system was at the time)

Agreed.

Currently we're midfield lite, if we're going to go midfield heavy and dominate from that area then we are competing with the whole of the top 4's midfields and we'd need more than just Aouar.

The only reason we beat Chelsea, Liverpool 2x and City is because we ceded the midfield battle and opted for strong defense and sharp counters the Atletico way.

The moment we switch to 4-2-3-1 we're playing a different game.

Is our midfield going to dominate a Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Utd? and then PSG, Bayern, Madrid, Barca ....... because that's who rule at that level.

The beauty of playing 3-4-3 is that we don't have to compete mid to mid, we play like a small club but with better players, that's what's given us our edge currently.
