It makes sense. He only has one year left on his contract, so won't be too expensive.
He is 29 and we don't have any experienced fit defenders except Mustafi, who isn't good enough.
He can also tutor Mavropanos.

...but Mustafi has never been good in my books. At best, he gets a good run in 6 consecutive games. At other times he has 3 terrible games, i meh game, and the occasional one good game.

Seems like an odd signing, he's older than Mustafi and has supposedly had a similar season in terms of gaffes and errors. Can only assume Mislintat likes him and there's a belief that with proper coaching he can be a solid starter for us.
