The thing with assists is that various websites interprete an assist differently.

Just an extreme example to make a point; Neymar is 40 yards away from the goal, passes to Messi who dribbles past 5 defenders and slots home.

Some websites would consider that as an assist, others wouldn't as they consider the influence of Neymar on the goal as negligible, hence the tally often differs from website to website.

the amoungt of open chances he blew last year was horrendous.

I don't know about that. I think he desperately needs to be the main man for his A game. Really runs things and makes it happen for Brazil. This move would be awesome but it's never happening.
