Even if I am not a big fan of the Xhaka/Carvalho partnership, this could be good.
I would drop Lemar deeper to form a 4-3-3 to benefit from his pace to link the lines in a better way. With 4-2-3-1 I would fear the front 4 getting isolated from the 2 DLP Xhaka and Carvalho

I don't know why people don't understand that 4-2-3-1 is dead, everybody is switching to Contes style.

Its like saying we can still play 4-4-2 like Blackburn 95 or Arsenal 2004

4-2-3-1 only doesn't work for us because wenger decided he didn't needca DM. You need at least one of your 2 CMs to be a proper DM (ie like a third CB). That is what Carvalho would give us.

ps I think 4-4-2 could work. Pretty sure City's last title was won playing 4-4-2!
