Arsenal considering January move for West Bromwich Albion youngster Saido Berahino
West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino has been added to Arsène Wenger's list of January targets after his good early season form

Arsène Wenger is considering a January move for West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino as he steps up his bid to recruit emerging English talent. Wenger, the Arsenal manager, has added Berahino to his list of potential new signings for next year after the England under-21 international's stunning start to the season at the Hawthorns. The 20-year-old was a virtual unknown this summer but has scored two goals in three games for the under-21s and a hat-trick on his Albion debut in the Capital One Cup tie against Newport. Berahino also scored the winner in the 2-1 victory over Manchester United last month and has been watched by scouts representing Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton in recent weeks.

Albion are in talks with the striker over a new deal and are prepared to offer him significantly improved terms on the basic £850 per week salary he currently earns. Berahino is settled at West Brom and it is understood Albion are confident that he will be given the contract he deserves by the board. His deal runs out at the end of the season and there is also an extra year's option in the club's favour. But the threat of a possible bid from a more established Premier League club is a worry for Steve Clarke, who gave the Burundi-born forward his first league start against Arsenal last weekend, and wants negotiations to be concluded before the end of the year.

"He's under contract with West Brom until the end of next season, so we've got plenty of time to sort out Saido's future," said Clarke. "He's a sensible boy. He understands that all the rewards and riches come with hard work and he has to just concentrate on his football and let other people worry about his contract situation and whatever. Saido has got a big future in the game and all he can do now is work hard and make sure he is still a top player in ten years' time."

Clarke has already suffered frustration in his bid to keep another home-grown Albion player this year, after Chelsea signed highly-rated midfielder Isaiah Brown in a deal that is set to go before a tribunal.

I don't know how to feel about this. He's shown a lot of potential so far this season but is he good enough to become a regular starter for us? His position isn't exactly one we're short on, either.

If he's cheap it might be worth a punt but I'm not too fussed.

Can't see where he'd fit into our team. He's not a lone striker and he'd be wasted on the wing.

I've seen him in the lone striker role a couple of times for WBA but he's been completely isolated and given no service as the baggies strung 9 behind the ball. I think he's an intelligent player with good movement and technique plus pace and ability to hit the ball hard and early with either foot.
And here's to you Mathieu Flamini

If we had gotten him instead of Welbs it would have been OK, but both of them is a risk imo.

I agree with the swedish player who said english players are very overrated and go for silly money. Berahino is a 6-8 million player and they want 30 million

It's this homegrown rule driving the price. As said above its either welbeck or berahino. Prefer berahino though

50 mil for Sterling. 30 mil for Berahino.

English clubs have gone mad.

Sterling 22 tops and Berahino 9 tops
