Arsenal make £25m offer for Real Madrid defender Pepe - report

Arsenal have made an offer for Real Madrid defender Pepe following a contract breakdown with the Spanish giants, according to AS.

Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in the Portuguese international but Arsenal have made an offer of €30 million (£25m).

Pepe's contract expires in 2012 and it would appear the player and club are not even close to meeting each other's terms, despite Jose Mourinho pleading with the board to give in to the player's demands.

The centre-back currently earns €1.8m (£1.5m) per year, thought to be one of the lowest wages at the club, but is now demanding double that to sign an extension.

Despite such a hefty fee being touted for the Portugal international, he is only rated by the Castrol Rankings as the 506th best player currently plying his trade in one of the top five leagues in Europe.

Everyone knows Arsenal don't spend over £15m. Which effectively is only just over 17m Euro's and not the reported 25m.

Pepe Departs Financially Troubled Besiktas

Former Real Madrid defender Pepe has left Besiktas with immediate effect, the financially troubled club have confirmed.

The 35-year-old joined the Turkish giants in July 2017 after leaving Real Madrid on a free transfer and he made 23 appearances in his only full season.

He had continued to feature regularly this term, turning out 10 times in the Super Lig, with his final game coming against Sivasspor on November 11.

But, with the club in financial difficulty and reportedly trying to cut their wage bill, Pepe's departure has been hinted at for several weeks and he bade farewell to supporters at Sunday's 2-2 draw with Trabzonspor.

And on Monday, Besiktas confirmed via a statement: "Besiktas and Kepler Laveran Lima Ferreira Pepe have mutually cancelled their contract and parted ways. The club thanked the Portuguese star for his efforts and wished him luck in his future career."

There are reports Pepe paid the wages of several members of club staff before the termination of his contract, which was said to be worth roughly €9.5million before bonuses.

Further speculation has suggested the experienced centre-back had been hoping to return to Portugal to see out the remainder of his career.

Porto have already been linked with bringing him back to Estadio do Dragao, with Pepe having last played for them in 2007.

Hasn't got the best reputation from his Real Madrid days, but he seems to have calmed down a lot in recent years.

Also Portugal's most instrumental player during their Euros win 2 years ago.

Despite being 35 he's apparently still fairly mobile and has tons of experience.

Might not be the worst emergency/short term option on a free.

Hell yes. I'd take him for a season. He was an excellent defender... no nonsense, strong, powerful and would add further steel. Can you imagine him and Sokratis in a pairing together at the heart of our defence?

Yes he's old so I'm not advocating a long term contract, but for a season or two, deffo. Look at how Lich has added steel to the mentality of the team and his fighting spirit has rubbed off on others. Some players you bring in regardless of age because a) they age like fine wine b) their presence in the dressing room brings a lot of value. Players like Chiellini, Bonucci, Pirlo, Pepe etc are those.

We aren't at the stage to go for the VVDs of the world yet, Klopp bought in Caulker and Klavan initially to shore up the defence. So Pepe is a definite yes from me.

Lichs is turning 35 in 3 weeks. Pepe is already 35. Older defenders struggle to adjust to the PL. Plus, Pepe turned down PSG last year (who took Dani Alves instead) because he wanted a 2-year contract and a game time guarantee.

Not going to happen IMO. That said, we desperately need a CB in Jan and his experience would be helpful.
