Arsenal are ready to battle it out with Paris Saint-Germain for the signing of Lyon star Lucas Paqueta, claims Calciomercato.

Newcastle have been linked with the 24-year-old playmaker in the past, but he is now registering on recruitment radars at Emirates Stadium and Parc des Princes.

In having made some efforts to see for myself how Big William (The Italian Job) has been doing in Ligue 1 over the last two seasons, as well as the speculation linking us to initially Hossem Aouar and then Bruno Guimaraes at Olympique Lyon, this Brazilian midfield maestro has been difficult to ignore.

However, in that he plays as CAM for Lyon and we appear to be evolving beyond the traditional no.10 playmaker role a la Mesut Ozil, and could without much imagination deploy either Odegaard or Smith-Rowe in that fashion should need of a tactical switch from our embryonic 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 set-up demand it, the acquisition of the now Newcastle player seemed the most logical and best suited to address remaining deficiencies.

In having been privvy to arguably the best midfield 3 in the Premier League in David Silva, Fernandinho and Kevin de Bruyne, and then to have used some form of sorcery or at least have the ability to induce mass hallucination on a grand scale regards my having watched Granit Xhaka function adequately in his new role, I have no doubt that Arteta could get one hell of a tune out of a midfield trio of Paqueta, Partey and Odegaard.

If Edu Gaspar has effectively used Aouar and Guimaraes as stalking horses and this summer we swell our Brazilian contingent with Paqueta's signature, super giant sized Brazilian flags are likely to become a welcome prominent feature at the Emirates.

Hes a 10 and we need a b2b 8 to replace Xhaka (we do however need back up to Odegaard if ESR is our starting LW)

Both Arsenal and Newcastle are linked with Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta, 24. The Brazil international was previously linked with Paris St-Germain and has a price tag of around £58m. (Chronicle)

Better PSG get their cheque book out and revamp who the best Brazilian player is in their squad, because if this guy were to end up at a rival Premier League club showcasing why they committed to their investment, they'll be plenty of wailing and gnashing of teeth as to why we slept on this one just like we did on a certain highly regarded prospect at Sporting Lisbon, or somehow found the logic in only taking one half of the brilliant double act on show at Dinamo Zagreb that was Eduardo Da Silva and Luka Modric, when both could have been acquired for what was relatively peanuts.

Paqueta is as sure footed as a mountain goat as well as appearing to have been brought up eating plenty of hard food as we refer to it in the West Indian community, as to prove naturally sturdy and able to withstand the physicality of the Premier League and evoke memories of a similarly ambipedalled, diminutive, strong Spaniard who like David Silva before him proved that the size of your talent usually trumps the size of your physical presence outside the realm of brute force alone, and no, none of that was meant as a penis related euphemism.

But I guess that the likes of neither Santiago Cazorla, David Silva or Tomas Rosicky for that matter, would have been considered a good option to fill that left midfield role in a three as is currently occupied with a fair degree of success by Granit Xhaka, since all were playmakers stylistically associated with the fabled 'number 10 position' regardless of being able to play pretty much anywhere on the pitch with the graft, guile and tenacity to suit, as has the Brazilian.

No, not because he’s a bad player but considering we have Xhaka, Viera, Odegaard who are all predominantly left footed, we don’t need a fourth midfielder, who’s also left footed its going to unbalance the midfield.

Also if I recall correctly Patino is also left footed

Fantastic player, absolutely class, but hes a number 10, not a b2b midfielder and we already have very good players for that 10 role.

A player in a position we don’t need, why are we even being linked with him?

Every time Arsenal scout a player, media says we’re lining up a bid. Another AM is hardly a priority this window.

From my point of view, simply because he would more probably than not be the best player in our squad.
