That's more important

Are Arsenal the worst team in the Premier League at scoring goals from set pieces? Whilst our treat from indirect free kicks isn't great, I don't think it's as bad as our (in)ability to defend set pieces.

If AG manages to take that to Sheffield's level of conceding just 15% of goals from set pieces it could easily be the difference between finishing 7th and finishing 4th (or better).

Whilst such a drastic increase on such short notice is probably not realistic, somewhere around 30% should be feasible and could still very much be the difference between CL and spending yet another year in the EL (or worse).

Yeah i agree

Also not just defensively. We don't score enough from corners and half the time those short-corners end up with the ball back with our goalkeeper.

Hopefully this guy can improve us at both ends. We have some good big defenders now

I think it's a lack of height combined with mental frailties and lapses in concentration. Fix that by signing new players rather than a coach but hey, hopefully he can help as well.

The good news in that chart is that we're equal 4th best in the league in terms of conceding from open play.
Seems like the set pieces issue would be easier to fix.

We've done exactly like that, haven't we? Saliba, Magalhaes, and this Georgson.

100% a moving attacker has momentum so will always out jump a stationary zonal marker pure simple physics

Would you rather concede or save the 5-6 goals a season? Which in our case in the PL is probably more than 5-6

I would prefer the players knew the basics of defending, wouldn't need a set piece coach then. This zonal defending works a treat in Europe, all I see is shit defending week in week out by every team that does it in the Prem - including the top teams.

If we look at the top defensive performances over a season in the Prem since 2000, the Invincibles conceded 26 goals without zonal, admittedly Chelsea used zonal under Mourinho, Man U never used zonal under SAF I believe (certainly not whilst Gary Neville played for them), in 2008 they conceded 24 goals. Lets look at the goals conceded during subsequent seasons by the champions:

2009/10 - Chelsea 32
2010/11 - Man U 37
2011/12 - Man City 29
2012/13 - Man U 43 (best Man C 34)
2013/14 - Man City 37 (best Chelsea 27 Mourinho pt2)
2014/15 - Chelsea 32
2015/16 - Leicester 36 (best Spurs/Man U 35)
2016/17 - Chelsea 33 (best Spurs 26)
2017/18 - Man City 27
2018/19 - Man City 23 (best Liverpool 22)
2019/20 - Liverpool 33

So you don't think I am cherry picking I will go back 5 seasons to up until the Invincibles season when zonal marking was not prevalent in the Prem:

1998/99 - Man U 37 (best Arsenal 17)
1999/00 - Man U 45 (best Liverpool 30)
2000/01 - Man U 31
2001/02 - Arsenal 36 (best Liverpool 30)
2002/03 - Man U 34

Hmmmm I was hoping for something more conclusive, there were more seasons pre zonal marking where the best defensive performances conceded 30+ goals than I expected.

Probably zonal like the rest of football clubs that are actually good

There is no better system, just who applies it the best. Same with formations, there is no best formation. don't know why there is always a clamour to copy others. The so-called clubs that are good at it have the best managers in the world and spent big big money on defenders and keepers !

This article is a pretty good discussion on the topic by 2 defensive legends of the Premier League era:

https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11678/9618105/zonal-v-man-marking-jamie-carragher-and-gary-neville-on-why-both-can-work-perfectly

Both make valid points but Gary Neville's argument is the one I side with, probably because when I played football, when it came to man to man duels, you were never gonna beat me physically. Thats your man, mark him. Its simple, you have no excuses.
