2019/20 UEFA Europa League Discussion Thread

So the Europa League has started, time for us to go one better this year. In other news the Welsh students are out on away goals and in the next round the Loyalist British club have to go to the Loyalest British Territory on the eve of the 12th of July (then afterwards, possibly on to the Irish Republic!).

I'm so bored of this competition.

Wanted to be in it once so that we could finally win, but my Lord, it doesn't start until the QFs.

Plus, the way it wrecks our schedule with those Sunday games.

Just play the kids and put all emphasis on the Premier League.

In my eyes, it's the only major honours we can realistically compete for. We already hold the record for most FA cups, and the PL will continue to be out of reach for a while.

Here's what we made in prize money last year, according to the prize money formula on Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro ... rize_money

Base fee for group stage 2,920,000 €
Group match victory 2,850,000 € (5W x 570k EUR)
Group match draw 190,000 € (1D x 190k EUR)
Group winners 1,000,000 €
Round of 32 € 500,000
Round of 16 € 1,100,000
Quarter-finals € 1,500,000
Semi-finals € 2,400,000
Losing finalist € 4,500,000

Total 16,960,000 €

Getting back into the CL should be the top priority for this season.

Screw going for the EL (unless our second string and youngsters can take us to the semis). We should put our eggs in the top 4 basket since competing for 1 of 4 places is easier than relying on winning a KO competition.

It's not either/or. If the players don't have the stomach for late stage EL football, they definitely aren't mentally ready to go for Top 4, especially when Top 2 is done and dusted already. It's not like we missed out on Top 4 because of EL-related fatigue.

The truth is we'll never know. And if Emery hadn't rotated for that Crystal Palace game, then we may have secured top 4.

I agree that we should compete for both, but I don't know if we have the squad to do so, so imo it would be wiser to focus on the path of least resistance.

That final run in should be enough for anyone to realise we dont have the squad to rotate.

We need to replace a lot of our second string longterm and we can start with 3 or 4 this summer. We've lost Ramsey too which is a further blow to the squad.

Signing 1 player is simply not good enough.

Linfield beat Qarabag 3-2

Wouldn't it be great if we got a group including us, Celtic/Rangers and Linfield?

Is the draw tomorrow? With another dead CL season likely after yet another bore draw, this can save European football

Incredible scenes at the King Baudouin Stadium.

Royal Antwerp take the lead despite playing with 10 men since the 35th minute. :hail:

AZ Alkmaar still eliminated as it stands but only need 1 goal against Antwerp who are now reduced to 9 men.

I guess I have seen maybe 200 live matches in my lifetime and the only non UK team in those games was Royal Antwerp in a pre season friendly, anyway they stand out as being without doubt the loudest fans from those games so would be good to see them qualify because they will bring great support wherever they go.
