Fairness has nothing to do with it.

That'd be like saying it's unfair Wenger never won the CL.

He's never won an international tournament because he and his teammates have never been good enough when it mattered most.

Of course, it's unfair in the grand scheme.

It's not like Argentina have lost a final in regulation time. No. Two finals lost on penalties and one at the death of ET. It is unfair for the best ever to have never won an international title when we clearly know, there would be no such argument had he played for Spain because he was eligible.

The thing I don't like about the whole "Messi has no help" narrative is that when Argentina reach a final Messi gets all the credit, but when they lose said final it's all because of his teammates.

You can't have it both ways, Messi can't get all the praise for reaching the Final and then be absolved of any blame when they lose it.

All his final performances have been lackluster, and in 2014 when he was laughably given the Golden Ball award he wasn't even the best player on Argentina, Mascherano was.

Btw if he chose to play for Spain it would have been a terrible look plus people would have assumed he could've won things with Argentina.
