I agree with that. Although I'd have preferred Usmanov spending big and us winning the UCL, but I also understand that Kroenke as an owner isn't the doom game we're playing.
However, if you're not going to spend big on players, you need to hire a manager that's tailor made for that and have that manager in big wages. Emery earns £3m a year, I gather.
The likes of Simeone, Klopp, Conte, Jardim, etc. never really spent big. Atleti get that occasional big money signing, which we are capable of too. Simeone is a prime example of a manager who has overachieved.
If you can't spend big or are unwilling to, you need at least to hire a manager with that in mind. That's where we have failed.
