I agree with that. Although I'd have preferred Usmanov spending big and us winning the UCL, but I also understand that Kroenke as an owner isn't the doom game we're playing.

However, if you're not going to spend big on players, you need to hire a manager that's tailor made for that and have that manager in big wages. Emery earns £3m a year, I gather.

The likes of Simeone, Klopp, Conte, Jardim, etc. never really spent big. Atleti get that occasional big money signing, which we are capable of too. Simeone is a prime example of a manager who has overachieved.

If you can't spend big or are unwilling to, you need at least to hire a manager with that in mind. That's where we have failed.

I’m not sure any of our players on current form would get into the Spuds team!

Single-handedly dragged the worst squad of the Wenger era to 4th.

Next season basically won United the title by himself.

Also was a huge big game player during that time. For us, off the top of my head, he scored against United away, hat trick against Chelsea away, scored against Tottenham in the 5-2, scored against United at home and scored twice against Liverpool away - including a last minute winner.

Easily the GOAT season by any Arsenal player ever.

RVP was never as good as people made him out to be

He had a great season. So did Kevin Phillips playing for a far worse side

better than when thierry got 24 goals and 20 assists in a single prem season? better than 05/06 where henry dragged us to the CL final scoring at the bernabeu (did bottle the final tho) whilst scoring 27 in the league surrounded by youngsters essentially?

Yes, Henry statistically had better seasons, but in the context of the state of the club at the time, RVP was more impressive.

And 05/06 surrounded by youngsters?

05/06 was still the Invincibles minus Vieira, but we added Hleb.

Reyes, Van Persie, Fabregas, Gilberto, Ljungberg, Pires, Hleb, Bergkamp and Adebayor - that's an amazing supporting cast ffs.

RVP was playing with Gervinho, Walcott and Ramsey on the wing.

The fact Song was his main supplier says it all.

I feel like overall Henry edges it because he has the counter attack factor you would be scared of him as a fan even if he had the ball in his half, if he had of turned up in a final he could have been up there with R9.

Comparing players at different clubs is hard, even comparing players at the same club is difficult:

Henry pre Arsenal at Monaco and Juve played 160 games and scored 28 goals .... nothing to write home about
Henry at Arsenal .... 369 games 226 goals .... that's the dogs dangles
Henry post Arsenal at Barca .... 121 games 49 goals .... good but really not that great for Barca

So what made his Arsenal days stand out? Clearly the supporting cast Lehman, Cole, Vieria, Lauren, Silva, Campbell, Toure, Reyes, Van Persie, Fabregas, Gilberto, Ljungberg, Pires, Hleb, Bergkamp and Adebayor ... blimey those were good times ...

Where Van Persie was different is that he played, scored, and won things with far, far weaker teams both at Arsenal 07-12 and at Utd 12-15 than Henry played with 02-06 ... unlike Henry he pretty much had to carry some fairly average players for most of his career.

Would still without question have Henry as the greatest Arsenal striker of all time, but would probably have RvP as a better more influential striker across his entire career ... it's an argument that's very close, and no question both were out off the very top draw.

I think Henry just did it longer ultimately, if RVP hadn't had the injuries it could have been very close maybe in his favour, it's a case of comparing apples and oranges though.

Of course he did it longer, that's why I said peak RVP > peak Henry.

In terms of consistency no other striker in PL history comes close to Henry.

He was here for 8 seasons and won 4 Golden Boots, 50% Golden Boot ratio is absurd.

Just to put it in perspective, Aguero, who many now regard as one of the all time great PL strikers is in his 8th season with City but only has one Golden Boot so far.
