2017/18 UEFA Champions League

Postby Royal Gooner » Tue Jun 20, 2017 11:03 am

As we are not partaking in this two-bit competitition, here is a thread for those who may have a passing interest.

The second round will be interesting. Linfield vs Celtic! It will be just like the Old Firm and i bet there will be a few Rangers fans over in Belfast to enjoy it. Would be even more amusing if they played it on the 12th of July, Celtic fans would be in hell to be in Belfast on Orangeman's day!

Today's the day when we have The Old Firm match in the CL. Rangers jr. (Linfield) vs celtic. Though bit cowardly of celtic not to take their allocation, I suspect they had flashbacks to Gibraltar.

Not with a loud and proud Loyalist crowd behind Linfield. I think it was a real shame they didn't play this on the 12th, would have made for some entertaining action on and off the pitch. ;)

Celtic won but more importantly bottles were thrown at Celtic players. Apparently there were Celtic fans in the stadium as well. Should be banned tbh.

Also griffiths whoever he is tied a celtic scarf to a goal post at the end of the game which pissed off the Linfield fans who then tried to get on to the pitch.

These footballers aren't the brightest are they?

Wenger claims that the Prem is more important than CL these days, unlike a few years ago. Thoughts?

I tend to agree with Wenger. He's talking from a financial point of view. Even without the finances, CL has stagnated over the years. The last I remember enjoying the CL was the season Chelsea won it. It had an edge, an unpredictability.

Initially, CL was great because you had so many great clubs with a chance to win it. These days, meh.

Speak for yourself :) the CL has been amazing these past few years.

I agree with Wenger on the financial front. PL money > CL money. However, the PL isn't as important as the CL in terms of competition. For that to happen, the PL needs to become like the NBA where the league has a monopoly on the world's best players.

And regarding unpredictability: you could claim the same thing about most domestic leagues. Other than Monaco and Montpellier winning Ligue 1, Leicester winning the PL, and Atletico winning La Liga, none of the leagues have been that unpredictable the past few seasons; the Bundesliga and Serie A have been downright boring from a parity perspective when looking at the champions.
