Unless something transpired that we're not privy to, Sokratis did not deserve to be ostracised whilst inferior-performing centre-backs with questionable on-field attitudes kept racking up appearances. Fell victim to incompetence at board level which left the club with a bloated squad and it looks increasingly likely that he was left out based on profile, rather than merit. Top-notch competitor and our best CB during his first season at the club.

I have the utmost respect for him, he always showed respect for the badge. He trained with and made appearances for the U23s when Arteta cut him.
When Greek media poked fun at him for playing with the juniors, he responded with class and dignity.

This is a guy who prioritizes playing football. Hope he finds a new club this window.

I will miss Sok I rated him not a ball player, but the most solid CB we had until gabby come along, I understood the Ozil situation but didnt understand sok being left out, I thought there were very good aspects of his game that others could have learnt off

I'm non commital about him; haven't been long enough at AFC to form a bond or opinion. AFC is a big club, many dynamics, so impossible to do justice to everyone who walks through the door.

We overpaid for him really considering his age but he wasn’t as bad as people made him out to be, ideal centre back for a team which parks the bus and gets rid of the ball straight away.

Another player who has left the Emirates is Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who agreed to end his contract with the club six months early.

Mikel Arteta says the defender was a "great person to work with" but insists he "had to make a decision".

“First of all I want to thank him because he is such a professional and a great person to work with," said Arteta.

"It’s a shame because we have a lot of central defenders, we are over loaded with foreign players. I had to make a decision. It was a tough one.

"He took it really really well. He’s always been really supportive and helpful. From the bottom of my heart I wish him the best.

"He has been a pleasure to work with and wish the best for him and his family in the next chapter.”
