MADRID, Spain (AP) - Cesc Fabregas or David Villa could find themselves on the bench for Spain's opening European Championship match against Russia.

Coach Luis Aragones experimented with two separate formations Wednesday morning with Valencia striker Villa taking Fabregas' place in a 4-4-2 formation while the Arsenal midfielder returned to the fold under the 4-5-1.

Aragones has traditionally used a 4-1-4-1 system with Liverpool striker Fernando Torres alone in attack, which has left Villa coming off the bench.

Spain, whose 1964 Euro triumph represents its sole major trophy, is looking to rebound from a disappointing World Cup in Germany two years ago when it was eliminated by France at the first knockout stage. Spain remains a favorite at the June 7-29 tournament alongside Germany, Italy and France.

The one-hour long session at the team's Las Rozas training ground was only the second since the players joined up on Monday. But double training sessions are expected through the week until the team travels to Huelva on Friday to prepare for Saturday's friendly against Peru.

Spain has one more warmup friendly against the United States on June 4. It has Group D matches against Sweden and defending champion Greece after Russia.

The afternoon session is expected to give a better idea of what formation Aragones will field against Peru. Holding possession through the midfield is where the team appears to be more comfortable.

"Right now our strength is possession. At dead ball moments, it's not our strength but we can overcome this," Villarreal defender Joan Capdevilla told reporters.

Around 150 children, some with face paint, offered vocal support at the morning session, news agency Efe reported.

I am gutted to see no Luis Garcia, i really rate him.

What a squad though, i really hope Fabregas plays, they were a better team with him on the pitch in the world cup.

I like Luis Garcia(except for the thumb sucking goal celebration, makes him look really...wierd)
I think Spain will go further if they ditch the "Torres up there alone" tactic.
They have the firepower to worry any defence and the creativity in the midfield to provide the ammunition.

Agreed and I also hope they give Iniesta a good run, that boy is quality. He's the first footballing goth but absolute quality.

Finally a trophy in the arms of an arsenal player shame thats it for his country not his club. Bring on next season when that will change.
