[Chelsea 2 - 1 Arsenal] Drogba Deja Vu

[Chelsea 2 - 1 Arsenal] Drogba Deja Vu

It was a repeat of the 2007 Carling Cup final at Stamford Bridge. A player scored his first goal for Arsenal. The lead was cancelled when Drogba profited from a bad offside call. And the Ivorian finished the job off in style. The result has left Arsenal’s title hopes in shambles, and we now need Manchester United to drop 7 points in the next 7 games.

The match began on a nervy note, with both teams probing each other and refusing to take any risks. It suited Chelsea fine, but to see Arsenal players hold the ball for five seconds without moving, or receiving any off-the-ball movement was painful! Not only is it boring, we weaken our chances by not playing to our strengths.

Robin van Persie started showing some signs of regaining his match sharpness, but out wide, he failed to influence the game too much. Eboue was mostly dreadful, and could well have been sent off when he produced a deliberate handball while on a yellow card. I will be amazed if he is still playing on Arsenal’s right wing next season. Adebayor, meanwhile, continued his slump in form which has probably resulted from the alarming lack of service from midfield.

As the half progressed, Chelsea started dominating possession, and even managed to squander a great opportunity when Drogba raced clear only to fluff his second touch. Arsenal did not manage to conjure too many chances of interest, and a dreary first half came to an end with both teams satisfied, and ready to go for the three points in the remaining 45 minutes.

The second half saw an open game played by two teams who needed to win. Arsenal drew first blood with an inch perfect near post header from Sagna – his first goal for any club! Soon after though, he was substituted having sustained an injury. He had given his team a precious lead, but they would need tenacity and a bit of luck to maintain it.

Neither was in evidence when Chelsea launched a long ball forward with three Chelski players in off side positions. The flag stayed up, and Gallas failed to cut out the ball, which fell to the feet of Didier Drogba and in a flash, the lead vaporised.

It was to get worse though, as Le Sulk Nicolas beat Gallas to flick a header into the box, and Drogba coolly blasted home. It was as sick as a punch in the soft parts, and the sight of Flamini lying in dismay on his back did little to rekindle hope.

Walcott was brought on to try and rescue something, but hardly received the ball. He is probably our best crosser, but yesterday, he was completely isolated and received scant service.

The final whistle left Arsenal 6 points behind Manchester United, 1 behind Chelsea, and staring at the very real possibility of ending a great season without any trophies. But the season is far from over, and with a triple pool treat and a trip to Old Trafford beckoning, we certainly have no reason to give up. Win everything that comes our way from now on, and we could well end up adding some silverware to our loot sacks. C’mon Arsenal!

He's not the worst player out there. I would certainly accept him. Drogba - RvP would be too hot for most defences to handle.

But he seems to think that only clubs like Real Madrid are truly 'big' clubs, so I don't think he'll be coming our way.
