Arsenal sign Portuguese winger Centeno

Arsenal have signed Portuguese winger Jonatas Centeno.

The 16 year old, who has been capped by his country at U15 and U16 levels, previously spent time with Fulham and will add some much needed depth to Arsenal’s development squads.

Arsenal have often had to deploy central-midfielders such as Jon Toral and Thomas Eisfeld in wide positions in recent seasons, as, prior to Centeno’s arrival, there was not a natural winger amongst the club’s contingent of young professionals. Centeno will most probably begin his Arsenal career in the U18 side. He will initially sign scholarship forms for next season, but will automatically be offered a professional deal when he turns 17 next year.

Arsenal U21s, meanwhile, take on Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane tomorrow, with striker Chuba Akpom a serious doubt due to fitness concerns. Zak Ansah should feature again having made a goalscoring return to action against West Ham United on Monday.

Much needed depth to our youth development squads? What? You're not supposed to win things at that level, you're supposed to learn to be a better footballer.

Yeah but if you lose week in week out, you are not learning much. You need to be expected to do well even at youth level and learn to deal with pressure

You learn more from losing IMO.

Exactly. Where is all the talent coming from within the area of North London?

Closing down so many youth centers within the area and providing fewer places for kids to play football isn't exactly helping i see.

People love football in London but it seems there is little or no opportunities given for people to be discovered or seen.

it's weird really you see guys like sanogo been given more of a chance than akpom for example and guys like zelalem more of a chance than aneke or even crowley.

I do find that there is a bias to imported youth at our club even if they are garbage. I wouldnt say akpom is any worse than sanogo and i feel like he atleast deserves a chance. The same goes with aneke he is more deserving of first team opportunity next year than zelalem but he obviously wont.

I dont think Aneke suits PL football. He is way too pedastrian. I have heard people say we dont give english kids a chance, but so far none of them have proven the club wrong. The likes of sidwell dont count as he was part of probably the greatest arsenal team ever

There is no bias no1 fan. They are just better. You get talent like JET who are more concerned with booty shaking contests than working on their game because with the money they get they become arrogant and don't improve.
