At our very best, under the first years of Wenger, we rarely went for those players considered the 'best'.

True.

Who had heard of Vieira, Petit, Anelka, Ljungberg, and many more?

All fairly anonymous signings who turned out great.

Phil the royalist,
You are revising history. Vieira and Henry were not unknown. They were in Italy and considered top talents. It’s just that they hadn’t fit into their respective teams and Wenger had a reputation in France that attracted them to him. After all they were both members of France 98 so hardly nobodies. I think Henry was even a record signing at the time. Petit was Monaco captain when he joined us and someone known to Wenger from his Monaco days. There are many other such examples like Wiltord who were accomplished players. Not everyone Wenger bought was unknown or a punt.

You accuse somone of revising history and then claim Vieira was a well known player when we signed him!

Vieira was TOTALLY unknown to us and just a kid when we signed him.
Henry was known for sure, but not considered the 'best' by any means.
The vast majority of Wenger's signings we'd never heard of.

You were comparing apple and oranges, in the early days of Wenger when scouting systems weren’t as developed at they are now Wenger knew the French market and that gave him a huge advantage, he also did have an eye for talent in those days, Arteta doesn’t, you can see that from his time with us.

Just because Arteta signs some young players doesn’t mean they’ll be any good, he’s a poor judge of ability so I don’t find it exciting at all, not unless they were already touted to be some of the best youngsters around with the talent to go to the top.

Henry was top scorer for a world cup winning French team

Vieira was unknown to us but don't forget, we got him from AC Milan who are a giant so they knew about him.

Anelka was unknown. The world and it's dog knew petit and ljungberg

Spot on about the names above.

Anelka was the only real unknown, though Wenger did turn Petit into a top top midfielder.

Vieira was at AC Milan for a reason (arguable the best side in Europe at the time), because he was rated as the best youngster in France, he was massively highly rated, you didn’t end up at AC Milan in those days unless you were something special.

1996-2006 was truly a glorious era for talent at Arsenal.

Sadly I dont see it happening quickly they have invested money into Arteta and won't want to look like the knobs they are. Arteta already has an excuse for the start of season with covid interruption. But any club should have made some sort of plan b for that situation.

Different times in football as well. Fans didn't know as much. Information didn't travel as fast, footage of players and matches wasn't so readily available and the average fan wasn't watching other leagues. Punditry was of a low standard as well and it wasn't even close to some of the tactical breakdowns you see now. In England, maybe the players weren't as well known and especially with fans because news travelled slower.

Today, we have the Internet, YouTube, access to loads of channels, social media, word about talent travels faster to fans. Heck, even the videogames have a players likeness and charactistics down to science. Back in the day the games wouldn't even have real names or licensed teams.

That's criminal, no words for that.

Kroenke is being fleeced.

Arsenal have been told by Sheffield United to raise their offer for 32-year-old Aaron Ramsdale to more than £32m after having two bids rejected for the goalkeeper

The guy is 32 why are we willing to pay anywhere near that?

Perhaps cos we like old players?? :sneaky2: Oh and we have the chuckle brothers on the case.
He's 23

Ljunberg played for Halmstad and didn't even make his Sweden debut until the year he joined us.
Petit was at Monaco and only made a handful of French squads in the preceding 4 years before joining us. Monaco were not tearing up trees during the vast majority of his time there.

99/100 of Arsenal fans had no clue how good (or bad) these 2 players were when they joined us.

To suggest that fans were not interested in football if they didn't know who these two players were is actual revisionist history.

But we're talking about players in the PL, one I've never heard of until he played in a friendly for England, and the other who isn't top notch.

Nope, that is incorrect. We signed him AFTER the England game, in fact it is documented back that one of the main reasons Wenger bought him was on the strength of his performance for Sweden against England:

Arsenal scouts watched him for over a year and Arsenal's manager, Arsène Wenger, took the unusual step of authorising the signing after watching Ljungberg play for Sweden in their victory against England on television, without seeing him play live. Seeing Ljungberg's performance against England only confirmed to Wenger that Ljungberg could cope against English opponents, and he was signed shortly after

We all saw that game .. we all saw how good he was.
