Highbury tale now fact

Postby She_Gunner_Wales » Tue Jun 19, 2007 8:04 pm

From Arsenal.com:

One of the most romantic tales in Highbury’s folkore has been given a new twist by a recent discovery by workmen currently redeveloping Arsenal’s old stadium.

Until the early 1990s, it was strongly rumoured that a horse was buried under Highbury’s North Bank Stand, with stories suggesting that a horse, together with the cart it was pulling had accidentally tumbled to its death while the foundations of the original North Bank construction were being laid in 1913.

However, no equine remains were discovered when the North Bank was redeveloped in 1992, seemingly scuppering this part of Highbury heritage. That is until now!

Further to Arsenal’s move to Emirates Stadium last summer, the development of the Club’s old stadium into Highbury Square has meant further digging has been necessary. And, deep below the surface, workmen from main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, discovered two horseshoes alongside the remains of some timber, believed to be the cart.

Pat Brennan, the workman who discovered the artefacts said: "We were digging at the north end of the site, where we are excavating for the foundations of the Highbury Square apartments and discovered what looked like two rusty old horseshoes. I took them to the site offices and one of the lads, who is an Arsenal fan, mentioned the story about the horse. It’s great to think that I may have found some items which have a place in Arsenal’s history."

how hard would it been for a workman to take a horse shoe on site and pretend he found it to make load of money
very suspect to me

i would by a old ring and get the words chapman engraved on it and rub a bit of dirt on it ,

would be worth a fortune
