Can find many examples like that through out the season.

Players need to ignore Arteta sideways fetish and play Auba in

Got to be a few gifs going in this thread tonight, sideways passes even in the last five minutes when we needed a goal!

Its the worst football I have ever seen Arsenal play with my own eyes! The previous worst was mid-1990s George Graham hoofball, but at least we had players I liked and connected with.

Definitely the worst thing about our 'football'. It's not new, it's been happening for many years.
Sideways and backwards. The players are too scared to actually take any chances.
They must be bonused on pass completions or something.
It's ridiculous.

So many occasions yesterday where we could break away but players stopped, cut back and slowed the play down, I think arteta is telling them to play that way though, we are absolutely a team in his image, slow, sideways and bang average.

Yup, that exactly what it is, its coaching. Before Emery we didn't play out from the back as much as we did with Emery, it was suicidal at times with Emery but he made it clear that's how he wanted his players to play. Arteta comes in and its more of the same. Now some people on here blame the players especially when we had that period of mistakes leading to goals. I said the players do it because they are instructed to do so - otherwise they would whack the ball out of play/long to get rid of it. Some argued that there is no way Arteta has told them to take such risks. Arteta "claimed" the players should know when to play and when not to play - so trying to remove the blame from himself and putting it on the players.

But as most of us know, that's hogwash. The manager tells the players how to play, if the directive was if in doubt get rid of it - that's EXACTLY what the players would do, especially players like Leno who look entirely uncomfortable playing the ball out from the back.

Its exactly the same with this getting the ball out wide and crossing it to nobody rubbish, that's a directive that has come from the manager, why else would we be crossing the ball as much as we do ?!! Its all down to coaching and the system Arteta wants to play, instead of throwing players under the bus for implementing his strategy he should hold his hands up and say I f***ked up, these players cannot play this way.

You are asking people to believe that Arteta is specifically asking his players not to try and create dangerous situations in order to pass sideways or safe. That's ridiculous.

It is entirely logical and correct to suggest the onus is on the players to choose the correct pass in the given situation.

We also didn't pass overly sideways against Brentford - we went forward a lot, but the decision making by the players in the final third was not good enough.

It feels like players bonuses are paid on 'passes completed' or 'retaining possession'.

No he’s saying that Arteta is telling them to keep the ball and be patient, this in turn makes them turn down the riskier pass.

It’s not the players fault the style he wants to play is awful, this playing from the back just doesn’t work, he wants to be like Guardiola but he has much better and intelligent footballers at his disposal.

You seem to absolve Arteta of responsibility at every turn, it’s his team, his tactics, his lineups, his coaching, his subs, he’s in control.

If he’s not happy with what he’s seeing he’d tell them to launch it forward quickly, he is so he doesn’t.
