Yeah this window was very much hit and miss, we failed completely with Aouar and we’re lucky about the release clause for Partey or we’d have got no one.

We also barely shifted anyone for any fees at all. Next summer we’ll be losing a for nothing as well.

Sure will be, six players out of contract and five down to just twelve months:

Will we keep any of these?

Dani Ceballos 30.06.2021
Shkodran Mustafi 30.06.2021
Mesut Özil 30.06.2021
Sokratis 30.06.2021
David Luiz 30.06.2021
Matt Macey 30.06.2021

Players entering their final year - so again who will we want to pay big salaries to stay, and who will be leaving for peanuts?

Alexandre Lacazette 30.06.2022
Sead Kolasinac 30.06.2022
Eddie Nketiah 30.06.2022
Calum Chambers 30.06.2022
Mohamed Elneny 30.06.2022

That's 11 players who could leave us next summer .... ten of whom are in our current squad and will need replacing.

I think Eddie will be the only one out of that lot to get a new deal

Hopefully Kolasinac will be going in January, maybe Sokratis might for a nominal fee too

Power n Glory wrote:Still not convinced by Edu. It's great that we got the player but we had to activate his transfer clause. Nothing was negotiated and stupidly loaned Atletico Torriera for nothing when we could have sold him for money and still bring in Partey.

On to the next window. We'll see what happens there and if we're able to shift some more players to raise funds.

You say that but apparently there was a method to the madness.

They wanted Aouar but didn't want Lyon who are notoriously difficult to deal with bumping the price up on us seeing us splash the cash.

I honestly believe Aouar was first choice, then Partey.

Once Aouar deal went tits, Partey was signed ........ pretty much as it was supposed to be.

The only thing I'm weary of is that Partey could of been snatched by another club, then we would of looked real stupid.

As for Torreria, you can only sell if there are buyers, Tornio pulled out and Atleti refused to purchase, no point in keeping Tor here if he's miserable.

Have to admit, I'm a bit baffled by the strategy.

Thought it was "No one allowed to enter last year of contract" we then if wanting to keep them either give them a massive wage boost or let them go for near free.

Lacazette is a sellable asset, we should of extended by at least 1-2 years.

Letting players run their contracts down puts you in Ozil type situations if you want to keep them, we just saw that with Auba.

It's hard to attribute blame or praise of Edu this window. Our inability to sell was disappointing, but part of that is due to circumstances outside of Edu's control—a deflated European market due to the pandemic—and the mistakes made by those before him, namely the players we have on large contracts we're unable to shift. He wasn't here when Kolasinac, Sokratis, Mustafi, Ozil et al were given their current contracts. In the same vein, it's hard to give him too much praise for the Partey deal, as it required no direct negotiation with Atletico and the details of his contract were hashed out during Raul's time here. The same applies to Gabriel's signing and Aubameyang's new contract.

A big window is out of question. Firstly, there's no precedent. Secondly, fans won't be at the stadium until the vaccine is developed. Not in full capacity at least.

Next summer, Real Madrid will be splashing all the money. Won't be surprised if Aouar is one of those signings. Mbappe, definitely.

The positive about next season would be the return of Martinelli and Saka's added experience as a first team player.

Leno
Bellerin - Saliba - Gabriel - Tierney
Xhaka
Partey - Saka
Pepe - Auba - Martinelli

An ideal replacement for Xhaka, with an elite ACM, we could be looking at a title challenge. Too early of course.

We should have signed Tonali. He'd have been perfect for us. Young, world class potential, excellent passer, a skilled and more athletic DLP. Ah well.

I'm all for the second-coming of Project Youth. It's refreshing and we have more money now than we did then.
