Yes and it's really poor start to that "huge summer". Losing out on your first transfer target of the window to Aston fcking Villa is comedy levels of bad.

He will be searching franticly in retirement homes, has-been players, and Mothercare for our new players.

Sad when a player thinks he has more chance of winning something at Villa than Arsenal, how the mighty have fallen.

if we had a decent manager we'd be more of an attractive proposition.

Edu and all his South American contacts. The only South American he brought in was Willian. Do me a favor.

Richard Garlick's supposed to be the adult in the room. What's he been up to this summer?

That was a myth, tbh.

Edu's main South American contact was/is Kia Joorabchian. They worked together at Corinthians. After a stint with the Iranian nation team, he joined Brazil as a team coordinator. His major responsibility there was to coordinate the logistics.

I doubt he has some exclusive contacts there or is privy to inside information on unknown Brazilian talents. I'd like to know if the scout who discovered Martinelli was also sacked by Edu during the purge.

The issue now is we don't have a hustler like Raul who was corrupt but had loads of contacts. Nor do we have a versatile scout like Mislintat. Arteta is too new into management to have his own chain of network. Plus, he's never had to worry about recruitment before.

When clubs hire rookie managers, the team upstairs is usually strong. Or, a manager is all-powerful with a decent supporting cast. We're the only idiotic club that has rookies inside both doors.

No wonder we are failing to adequately offload fringe players, whilst also failing to hire top talents.

Francis Cagigao scouted Martinelli apparently. He was sacked.

Remember, we have also hired a third party company to hire scouts... after we sacked our original scouting team and talked this rubbish about working with a smaller scouting unit.

Didn't see a lot of talent during the Copa. Actually was a step below the Euros in every way.
Neither Brazil or Argentina and other power houses ( Chile, Uruguay, etc) showcased much talent other than the established ones.
So Edu can be absolved as far as talent unearthing goes in the SAms.

TIL scouts watch Copa América to spot young talents.
