He's in good company. Saka and Martinelli also nominated.

I had never heard of it until Ach posted this. So, according to Wiki, its for young footballers playing in Europe perceived to have been the most impressive during a calendar year (two halves to two separate seasons).

Thats big, has to be conclusive proof then that Saliba has been one of the best young players in Europe over a 12 month period. So much for him not being a stand out player nd so much for Arteta's assessment that Saliba isn't ready.

Messi, Cesc, Rooney, Aguero have all won the award. Haaland and Mbappe were recent winners so it's a good award to win for a young player.

It's a journalists view - a limited set of journalists.
Saliba won't win it anyway.

Hudson-Adoi was nominated last year.
So was that Wolves midfielder who can't get a game.

Martinelli was nominated.
So was guendouzi btw ... 3 years ago.

It's good to get nominated, but across Europes top leagues do you know how many U21 players are getting regular game time each week?
It included Martinelli, who has only played less than 1000 minutes of football in 2021.

Also, this is a journalist award - from only 14 publications across Europe.
Given that, it's meaningless other than journalists think that there are 20 players under the age of 21 that stand out against other U21 players. These are the same journalists that write clickbait stories every time Arsenal lose a game and go quiet when we win. Although it could help drive up the price we get for him if we have to sell, which seems likely.

Yeah not sure why Martinelli would be nominated for this latest award, he has hardly played, that makes no sense at all.

Guendo being nominated 3 seasons ago makes sense, he was probably our best player - or one of - in Emery's first season.

I guess it’s not player of the year award largely voted for by another teams fans when teammates voted a number of others and a manager of the month based on 3 games (2 against the bottom 2 sides which were narrow wins).

No it's not anything to do with fans in fact.
It's a few journalists with a history of picking some real duds in the final list of 20.

If it drives his price up I am all for it.

PNG specified some of the players that won it, those are some of the greatest players ever and the best two young strikers in the world right now.

He hasn't won it.
Every year flops are in the list of nominees.
Some will progress. Others fade away.

That's the nature of young players still developing.

Listen you can spin it however you like, but Saliba has been touted as one of the best young CBS in in Europe and has been performing very well every season.

He’s now been nominated for an award, which reflects what people think a bit him.

He's been ok this season but very shaky lately.
Waiting to see how he does over the full season to see if could make it at a higher level.
Not close to PL level yet.

You’re in the minority, most people think he’s been very good, even the people nominating and voting for awards.

I think their view is more meaningful personally since they clearly have seen him play a fair amount.

Personally I think Arteta's and Arsenal's coaches and management team view is more meaningful.
That's why he was sent to a lower league to get better.
I'll go with the coaches view over football journalists - notoriously hacks.

As for watching him. I have watched him play awful the last two games. He needs to get better. He should be dominating in the league he is playing in week in week out except against PSG. He's not.
