Qualifying for Champions League next season?

Postby kaijuhk » Thu Dec 13, 2018 3:54 pm

If Chelsea were to win the Europa League and finish in the Prem top 4, would a CL spot open up for 5th?

Bookies have Chelsea as favourites and us closely behind in second.

Nope, only if someone out of the top 4 would win it, 5 clubs of the same country would participate the season after in the UCL.
Last year Atletico Madrid won it. This year 4 spanish clubs took part: Real, Barcelona, Atletico and Valencia.

That sucks, so if we finish 5th and don't win the Europa, then we have another season of Europa footy. :BangHead:

Who will then get that place leading to the Champions League? If chelsea wins through the league placement and wins the European league, then someone else has to get a place in the Champions League?

Quite happy with Europa League football tbh, would like to be in the CL but it's not the end of the world, Europa has been quite fun.

Either way we're gonna be top 4 and win it so CL next season.

We can finish in top 4, Chelsea and Tot are not better teams this season than us.

Spurs season is about to hit a brick wall.

I've got a funny feeling by the end of February we'll be comfortably ahead of them

We need to go hard for the League imo we are in prime position to snatch a spot in the top 4.

Europa will be iffy depending on what teams crop up, I'd love to win it, but at this stage being so close to a successful top 4 season would shot we're progressing in the right direction, back up again.

CL qualification is key and we are in a good spot so far. We can either qualify through Europa or Top 4 in EPL which will most likely result in a fight w/ spuds. I think City and Looserpool will be a two horse race and Chelsea will solidify third place. I don't trust spuds. They have proven to be big time chokers. I also don't trust Looserpool to win the title because Klopp is known for being a serial loser, 0-6 in finals.
With all the being said, I still think we should focus on qualifying through winning Europa.

It would be a huge boost for squad morale, but also our standing in Europe. EL is a big time win, especially compared to 4th place in EPL which was never a trophy. Plus, for us fans there is nothing like those magic-laden European nights where the special players bring out their best. So far we are doing good, 5W 1D 0L GA2 GD10.

To be honest, I can't see us qualifying for the Champions League. The teams above us are all well ahead of us, and without at least one of them collapsing, a top four finish looks very unlikely. The same can be said about the Europa League. Chelsea are the overwhelming favourites, and we shouldn't underestimate Napoli, Inter and Sevilla.

We're stuck in a limbo where we're too good to be in the Europa League but not good enough to win it. On the other hand, we're not good enough to qualify for the Champions League. Don't get me wrong; for the long-term future of the club, qualifying for the Champions League this season is crucial. Unfortunately we won't do it.
