Arsenal Legends

Seeing as there was quite an interesting conversation about Arsenal Legends on the Emery thread....I think the topic deserves its own thread. Personally I think for someone to be called a 'Legend', they have to be that once in a decade type of player, that your Dad still talks about from 50 years ago (for instance) Too many good players get called legends, but the fact that they aren't all immortalised in bronze outside the Emirates, proves they probably aren't. So straight of the top of my head, here's some of mine:

Frank McIintock
Liam Brady
Tony Adams
Dennis Bergkamp
Thierry Henry

The word Legend is always contentious, but what it deffinately shouldn't be is a catch-all for players people liked

For me,

Adams

O'Leary

Collectively, the 1989 squad, but not necessarily as individuals

George Graham

Bergkamp

Wright

Henry

Vieira

The Invincibles collectively

David Seaman

Alex James

..... and several others from the 1970s and from the 1930s

....special mention for a forgoten man, our founder, captain and lifelong servant...

Mr David Danskin

Tough one depending on how much we're going to dilute the word "Legend".

For me .........

Ian Wright

Henry

Bergkamp

Tony Adams

Vieira

Seaman

Honestly most of mine will be from the Invincibles era because that's the era I remember best, I started supporting Arsenal in 1986 and obviously you had your Ray Parlour, Dixon, Merson, Adam's Keown, David Rocastle etc

That 80's / 90's team and then Wenger's era teams are the ones that are legends to me but I never witnessed the previous players so its hard to say.

Even Dixon is a legend to a certain extent because when I think of Arsenal RB, I think of him and Sagna so interestingly that's how I'll do it ........... player per position who I think of "Arsenal"

GK - Seaman, Lehman, Shilton

LB - Ashley Cole

RB - Dixon, Sagna

CB - Campbell, Adams

RM - Lujngberg, Ray Parlour

LM - Pires, Overmars

CM - Vieira, Fabregas, Rosicky

ST - Ian Wright, Henry, RVP, Bergkamp

Couple of traitors on the list but it is what it is, Ashley Cole owns LB as far as AFC is concerned, name one better?

That back four as a whole (Dixon, Bould, Adams & Winterburn) are legendary for their work as a solid and almost impenetrable unit. So of course, each individual player in it is a legend.

And not just at Arsenal, but in English football history.

That bottom bit i.e the team, read what I wrote, I said when I think of those players per position, they are the ones that spring to mind.

But my "legend" list was my first list.

Forgot about him tbh.

Still, rather that than include a keeper as a legend who's never played for us....

Regardless of the well documented issues, there is no doubt in my mind that Ashley Cole deserves to be right up there, but I think Kenny Samson would at least make it one hell of a scrap.

More upset I didn't include Wright over Henry ffs

How did I forget the one person who got me in to football?

Unforgivable.

For me a club legend is a club icon, the 2 are linked. So for that reason going back to Arsenal teams that I watched I would have:

Liam Brady
Frank Stapleton
Tony Adams
Rocky Rocastle
Paul Davis (for knocking out Glen Cockerill)
David Seaman
Ian Wright
Patrick Vieira
Paul Merson
Anders Limpar (for being excitement in a dour football playing team)
Ray Parlour
Dennis Bergkamp
Thierry Henry

Nigel Winterburn and Kenny Sansom, both better LBs, in my opinion.

Nigel Winterburn was the best of the lot.

Ashley Cole a better attacking full back.
