Not the first talented, but also passionate and petulant young player to be given the responsibility of co-captain in an attempt to help him mature. Happens all the time.

11 players on the pitch, but they make a 22yo loan player captain to help him mature? When has that ever happened?

''Loan player''.

Marseille signed Guendouzi on loan for the season, and handed him 4-year contract on top that. He's also one of the few OM players whose contract runs until 2026. Marseille are in the middle of a rebuild/rejuvenation, and it makes sense to give the armband to one of Les Bleus' youth teams captains, who's on a long-term contract.

Carrying the responsibility that comes with wearing the armband can help young players with leadership qualities mature. It's really not as uncommon as you seem to believe it is.

Here's a prime example (in this case it paid dividends) -

Rio Ferdinand could emerge ahead of Gary Neville as the automatic England selection most likely to wear the captain's armband in the World Cup following David Beckham's injury last night. While both defenders are almost universally expected to start the first group match against Sweden on 2 June, Ferdinand has the advantage of regular experience as a club captain.

David O'Leary offered the 23-year-old Londoner that chance with Leeds United to help him mature, and has been well rewarded with a good job that has not affected Ferdinand's form. Neville, if anything a firmer character with plenty to say for himself on the pitch, has not had the same opportunities while playing under Roy Keane and Beckham.

Elite behavior that serial winners like Vieira and Keane used to demonstrate. Reminds me of Jordan in the Last Dance. Bring him home.

To be honest I don't see how this can be criticised, I agree, that is the mentality of a winner. I have had to cuss players for not putting the effort in, especially when you are busting your ass!! I like this mentality, cannot criticise it

Yeah I don’t see anything wrong with what Guendouzi said, clearly he wasn’t happy with the level of application and voiced it.

If someone isn’t giving their all they should be called out on it.

He's definitely one of the all-time greats now.. a super-charged version of Vieira and Keane rolled into one... one that got away.

Too bad he can't act as a tape recorder for the manager's instructions like Xhaka. That's the kind of leadership we're looking for at AFC.

He is far from reaching Vierra or Keane's level, but his competition is not them. It's Elneny and Xhaka.
Same problem with Saliba. We never know if he will be at Campbell or Adams level, but surely he can't be worse than Holding or Chambers.
People are complaining because we exiled Guendouzi and chose to stick with Xhaka, Elneny and Mainland-Niles (as a midfielder, not FB).
