When was the last time he played in his position—in the league, or heck, this season?

On international break when he gets praise for every performance

Thats perhaps because he is playing for a manager who knows what he is doing?

Exactly

I got to see some of the Argentina/Uruguay game and purposely focused on Ant Man in trying to gauge any effect from the shananigans at AFC and the rumoured wish to leave.

To me he definitely didn't appear like a player suffering any kind of turmoil or lacking confidence or fitness from having had unduly enforced reduced playing time.

I would say that his performance wasn't outstanding in comparison to others that I have seen from him and probably wouldn't rank in his top ten games for club and country, rather it was a solid 7 out of 10 packed with all the winning tackles, possession of the ball, good distribution and protecting the defensive line that you want from a defensive midfielder.

In the past we have benefited so much from Italian clubs giving us access to the likes of PV4, DB10, TH14 and DP7, I suppose it's only fair that they want this one back I suppose.

I think Emery is trying to turn him into Banega, a relentless tackling playmaker and its not working.

However if it did work and we got a proper big DM in behind him it would have been great....but its not.

Emery on Torreira: "He was playing good last year, this year he's not being consistent but my challenge to him is to improve, to do better with some tactical issues on the pitch but above all being consistent"

Emery is a joke. Ozil and Torreira on same boat in his eyes lol.

He'll never admit he was wrong,

It was mostly his fault. Torreira, Ozil, Ramsey, Koscielny, even Xhaka.

The problem is Torriera is being asked to play the Messi role. It's like taking a MkII Ford Escort to the F1 track.
Torriera should never get past the half way line and focus entirely on breaking up play and protecting the back four, but no, Emery sees him as an attacking world beater.

Really poor today. Needs to played as DM. Getting him to press higher up the pitch isn't working. Looked like a headless chicken. His passing and possession game is almost nonexistent. Couldn't move the ball around as quickly today with him in the side. Poor positioning and far too weak. Needs to bulk up and get stronger otherwise he won't make it in this league. Doesn't have the legs or power to get up and down the pitch so it's best we restrict his mov9abd just have him sit in front of the back four. Pair him with Guendouzi for the next game or bench him.

A much better performance from Torriera. Really good and seems like he played deeper as a DM instead of box to box. Hustled all night and a played a good ball to set Kola off with for the first goal.

I think we'd have a great balance in midfield if he played alongside Guendouzi.

Of course he's going to play better in his actual position.

I noticed he was the unsung hero in midfield today, making good forward passes as well.
