There is no excuse for starting Cech and insisting he plays out from the back. There is no psychology, no cleverness, anyone that had seen Cech with the ball at his feet knows he will NEVER be a ball playing keeper.

So what the hell is Emery playing at?!!

Conspiracy theory: because Emery is insisting on Cech, the narrative in the media is that our defence tries to play the ball out from the back and isn't very good at it. As a result, teams try to press us all the way up the field, and then in the second half they are too tired to maintain it and we dominate.

Case in point, Newcastle switching to a back 4 against us.

Unai is playing chess while everyone else plays checkers

Emery may just not rate Leno at all?

Cech is one of his five leaders. The only player who's actually captain material aswell.

It's the only thing that makes sense.

Cech has actually been good as a GOALKEEPER this season

He’s just been a terrible footballer

If his job is to give near heart attacks to our defence/fans then yeah I agree

His job includes distributing the ball from goal, which is a huge cog in our tactical machine.

For that alone, he's been average as f**k all things considered, which they have to be. We can't just cherry pick aspects of the whole player because it suits.

Otherwise xhaka is a god if you don't consider his knack of dithering and playing sloppy 10 yard balls in our defensive third.

We don't know if Leno is worse seeing as he hasn't played and he needs a good run in the side, not just one off games before he can be judged.

Whilst I get that certain aspects of our performances and team selections have been a bit frustrating and maybe so far as to be infuriating, we might be guilty of focusing on the detail but missing the big picture.

We have a team. It might metaphorically need a respray, engine rebuild, new rims and exhaust, but we do have a team. The bedrock foundation of all successful teams is the collective mentality and togetherness, and our coach has definitely cultivated one like an expert in hydroponics.

Everything is still some way away from being perfect, but the remedial work is definitely underway. Issues raised regards Cech, Xhaka, Bellerin, Ozil, Ramsey, Sokratis, Torreira and Mustafi, nearly a whole team and still we've only lost the 2 games all the smart money had us down to lose.

Now that we have the two cup competitions with which to utilise the squad, we should start to get a clearer idea as to what our coach see's as his strongest team for the league.

I'll hazard a guess that he truly believes in patience being a virtue and is the bloke in the corner of the pub reading war and peace with a pint of Guinness.

However, the reality is that as fans, we have a tendency of going to McDonalds expecting to be served a five course meal cooked by a Michelin star chef.
