I think we ALWAYS look better when Luiz is in defence.

Good performance from the main man today, it seems like Arteta has finally wised up and realised Luiz is our best centre back, need to stop changing his partner every few games though just stick with the same formula otherwise we get dumb mistakes like Maris today, obviously rotation is fine but not on the scale Arteta is doing it with our centre backs

Luiz has been playing almost every game when fit, maybe once or twice Holding came in but that's it really.

Done well today, the warrior performance we know he has in him (see fa cup). Just has too many mistakes like Mustafi over the course of a season to be considered a starter regularly.

Interestingly, I got thinking, perhaps we get better displays from Luiz when he playes centrally (like in 3 at the back), or the right of 2 central CBs or the right with 3 at the back, here is what I found, for league games he started only in the 2019/20 season:

Left CB - Won 7, Drew 11, Lost 4. That relates to a 31.8% win rate
Central CB - Won 3, Drew 1, Lost 3. That relates to a 42.8% win rate
Right CB - Won 1, Drew 1. That relates to a 50% win rate

In the 2020/21 season:
Left CB - Won 2, Drew 2, Lost 3. That relates to a 28.5% win rate
Central CB - Won 1, Drew 1. That relates to a 50% win rate
Right CB - Won 3, Lost 2. That relates to a 60% win rate

Clearly some of the sample sizes are far too small to have any real meaning, but my gut tells me that Luiz puts in better performances when he is central in a 3 or on the right side of a 2 CB partnership. Comparing our win rate across the 7 games he started on the left this season and the 5 he started on the right this season, its not even a competition - we are far better when he plays on the right.

He's putting in an argument for extending his contract with his latest performances, but still I'd be reluctant to with Saliba and Mavropanos coming back.

Did we have better in Wenger's last 3 seasons??? From 2015/16:

We had a very slow Mertesacker, a dead Koscielny, Callum Chambers, Gabriel Paulista, Rob Holding, Mustafi, Mavropanos.

Luiz is better than all of them !

HH that’s weak mate. The club got rid of Wenger for precisely this reason. I’d rather have Wenger with a shit squad than Arteta with a shit squad. You can’t be justifying Luiz as our best CB.

Luiz is our best CB though, surely that is not up for debate ? Nobody has said he doesn't make mistakes, but he is the only CB capable of putting in World class performances, Holding is not a leader, neither are Mari or Gabriel. Luiz's distribution is miles better then everyone else's, you can't just gt rid of Luiz and have 2 "followers" control the defence.

And as I have suggested, it looks as though Luiz is better suited to playing on the right side of a CB pairing/partnership. You said is this how desperate we have become, we all know your stance on Wenger, you would have him back in a heartbeat. But if you are suggesting our CB situation is worse now than it was under Wenger you are sadly mistaken, we have better options now than we did under Wenger. Give me Luiz, Mari and Gabriel over shit Kos, Shit Merts, Mustafi, Chambers and Paulista.

Luiz isn't fit to lick Kos' boots, and no he's not the best of the current batch either.

PSG palmed him off to Chelsea and they palmed him off to us. It’s a disgrace that we are trying to extend his contract. We need to go out and buy a long term partner for Gabriel.

I was under the impression that the considerations regards retaining David Luiz's services further, had his wanting to coach and mentor at its core as opposed to his continuance as a first team starter.
