Good show from him today. Developing a good understanding with Gabriel as well.

Still think he'd boss it for us as DM.

Yes but we can’t afford to move our best centre back out of position

Him and Gabriel are our best cb pair.

We have experienced some games this season where Holding has also been paired with Gabriel and the partnership looked solid. The same can be said of Holding and Luiz as well as Luiz and Mari although I'm struggling to recollect any featuring Holding and Mari.

That the pairing of our two Brazilian centre backs for the last couple of games is considered as the best of the bunch I have no qualms with, beyond the fact that Gabriel and Mari have never been tried together.

That Arteta may well have seen in training that there is indeed an incompatibility between the two that he would be unwilling to expose beyond the practice pitch, I can live with more so than the blanket notion of two left footers not being able to play the position together.

I for one am glad that the references to David Luiz of late have primarily been positive, and not inclusive of his little foibles we've had mention of 6,788 times before, along with his Chelsea connection.

However, in my ranking of the best and most effective performances in the central defensive positions for this season, I would conclude:

1. Gabriel
2. Mari
3. Luiz
4. Holding
5. Tierney

I actually feel like all four of our centre-backs have had good seasons, which isn't something I've been able to say for a while.

I echo the same sentiment whilst not forgetting what our base line was, and then daring to get a little bit carried away and God forgive me, overly enthused with the upturn in fortune and performance given what we had become accustomed to.

Only in hushed tones may the words iimprovement and progress be whispered now for fear of reprisals and being accused of devil worship, witch craft and heresy as though back in the 17th century with Matthew Hopkins and Co.

Best thing we can for the defence is renew this mans contract, our best defender by far would cost at least 50M to upgrade on him which we don’t have

If reports are true and he needs surgery on his knee which will likely keep him out for the rest of the season ... Surely we have to let him go ?

Can't give him a new contact at 34 coming back from knee surgery
