How are Puma not a big boy brand ? They made and still do the most iconic pair of football boots ever made - worn by the best footballer EVER, Diego Armando Maradona !! Puma King. Pele wore them too !!
Personally I have liked the Puma kits and I like the puma brands although I only wear Adidas boots. When it comes to brand power though...there's no contest as to whether Puma is a "Big Boy" brand. It's not.
What it really comes down to is who has the money to pay us the most, AND who has the world wide exposure that we can piggy back on. These companies are MUCH MUCH larger than Arsenal. We are using them as a way to spread our brand as well. That means Nike (30bn revenue 2017) and Addidas (20bn revenue 2017) and not Puma (4bn revenue 2017) are what we should be wearing.
The references (Diego/Pele) you're referring to are not relevant at all to current consumers. The younger market is the target segment to sell football boots and other apparel to (Nike has said it's target for football equipment is 20-). You might say that Puma is better contender in the football specific segment, but when it comes to brands that we should be associating with it's about total brand power.
